A Major Speed and Capacity Upgrade
The most significant improvement is the sheer power of the new system. The upgraded platform is built to handle over 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute, a nearly fivefold increase from the previous capacity of around 32,000. In parallel, the backend
Passenger Reservation System (PRS) can now manage over 40 lakh inquiries per minute, up from 4 lakh previously. For users, this translates to fewer crashes, faster page loads, and a much smoother experience, especially during high-traffic periods like the Tatkal booking window.
A Cleaner and More Intuitive Interface
The redesigned website features a cleaner, clutter-free layout that prioritises ease of use. Responding to years of user feedback, the new portal has removed many of the common frustrations like unnecessary pop-ups and distracting flashing graphics. The booking process itself has been streamlined, requiring fewer steps to complete a reservation. One of the most welcome changes for many will be the reduction in CAPTCHA verifications, which often interrupted and slowed down the booking flow.
Smarter and Simpler Booking Features
Several new features have been introduced to make finding and booking tickets more convenient. A new fare calendar allows travellers with flexible dates to easily compare prices across a range of days to find cheaper options. Another time-saving update is the unified seat availability screen. Instead of checking different classes like Sleeper, AC 3 Tier, and AC 2 Tier separately, users can now see availability for all classes on a single page. For the first time, passengers can also select their preferred seats or berths during the booking process, similar to booking a seat in a cinema.
More Accessible for Everyone
The platform has also been made more inclusive. The new website will support multiple Indian languages, making it accessible to a much wider audience across the country. Additionally, the process for booking concession tickets has been simplified. Facilities for Divyangjan, students, and patients, which previously involved separate processes, are now integrated into the main platform.
The Drive for a Better Experience
The push to revamp the website reportedly gained momentum after students at an event in Rajasthan raised their concerns directly with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who then promised a completely overhauled portal by July 15. While a beta version was launched for testing, the full rollout aims to modernise the nearly four-decade-old reservation system. With the ability to save passenger details for quicker repeat bookings and a streamlined payment process, the new IRCTC website is designed to transform one of the most common digital tasks in India from a frustrating chore into a seamless experience.
