1. Examine The Face and Eyes
Deepfake technology often stumbles on the finer details of the human face. Pay close attention to the eyes and mouth. AI models can struggle to replicate natural blinking, sometimes resulting in a person who blinks too much, too little, or in a mechanically
awkward way. Similarly, skin can appear unnaturally smooth and textureless, or overly shiny in patches. Edges around the hair, jawline, and ears might look blurry or distorted as the AI works to blend the fake face onto a source video. Another subtle clue can be found in facial expressions; if the emotion conveyed by the face doesn't seem to match the tone of the words being spoken, it's a significant red flag. A flat expression paired with an emotional voice, for instance, suggests a potential mismatch that human actors naturally avoid.
2. Listen for Audio and Sync Issues
Your ears can be just as important as your eyes in detecting a deepfake. Listen for audio that sounds robotic, flat, or lacks the natural variation in pitch and tone of a normal human voice. AI-generated audio can sometimes contain strange background noises, static, or have an unnaturally clean sound that lacks any ambient noise. A major giveaway is poor lip-syncing. If the person's mouth movements don't perfectly align with the sounds they are supposedly making, it’s a strong sign of manipulation. Even a slight delay or imprecise mouth shape for certain sounds can betray the forgery. Sometimes the audio itself might be authentic, but placed in a new context, so listen for cuts, abrupt changes in background noise, or unnatural pauses in speech.
3. Scrutinise Lighting and Background
Creating consistent lighting is a major challenge for deepfake software. Look for shadows that fall in odd directions or don't match the light sources in the scene. For example, if a person's face is brightly lit from the left, the shadows on their face and in the room should behave accordingly. Inconsistencies can expose a fake. The background itself can also be a clue. AI models sometimes produce backgrounds that are unusually blurry or that seem to flicker or 'melt' around the edges of the main subject. Reflections are another area of difficulty. If a person is wearing glasses, check to see if the reflections are consistent with their surroundings. A lack of reflection or a strange glare can be an indicator of a digital overlay.
4. Verify the Source and Context
Often, the most effective detection method has nothing to do with technical glitches. Before you even analyse the pixels, analyse the source. Ask yourself: who posted this video? Is it a reputable news organisation or an anonymous account with a strange username? Trustworthy sources are typically transparent about their identity and funding. Perform a quick web search to see if any credible outlets are reporting the same story. Manipulated media often thrives by removing context, such as presenting an old video as a current event. If a public figure appears to be saying something shocking or out of character, check their official social media accounts or statements to see if they have addressed it. This critical thinking habit is often more powerful than spotting visual flaws, especially as technology improves.
5. Use Technology to Fight Technology
While human observation is key, several tools are being developed to help automate deepfake detection. Some advanced systems analyse subtle biological signals that AI fails to replicate, such as the faint changes in skin colour caused by blood flow. While many of the most powerful forensic tools are not yet widely available to the public, the technology is evolving. For the average user, slowing down a video's playback speed or going through it frame-by-frame can help you spot the inconsistencies mentioned earlier more easily. No single clue is definitive proof, but a combination of several warning signs should make you question the video's authenticity.
