A Panoramic Window to a Lush World
Southern Railway has introduced a special Vistadome coach on the Madurai-Guruvayur Express, timed perfectly to showcase the post-monsoon splendour of the Western Ghats. This coach is specifically designed for sightseeing, featuring oversized glass windows,
transparent roof panels, and seats that can rotate 360 degrees. This ensures that no matter which way the train turns, passengers have an unobstructed, panoramic view of the spectacular scenery. The service has been launched as a temporary run, primarily on weekends, between October 22, 2026, and mid-January 2027, making it a limited-time opportunity to experience this unique journey. The addition of this coach, attached to the recently upgraded LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) rake, marks a significant boost for tourism in the region, turning a simple train ride into a memorable expedition.
The Historic Kollam-Sengottai Line
The journey is as rich in history as it is in scenic beauty. The Kollam-Sengottai line is one of the oldest railway routes in southern India, a marvel of British-era engineering that first opened in 1904. It was conceived to connect the coastal trading hub of Kollam (formerly Quilon) in Kerala with Tamil Nadu, creating a vital artery for transporting spices, cashew, and forest produce. For over a century, the metre-gauge line was a lifeline for communities in the region. After a period of conversion, the route was reopened as a broad-gauge line, retaining its original, winding alignment through the challenging mountain terrain. Today, the journey is a tribute to that history, taking passengers through dense forests, deep cuttings, and numerous tunnels that pierce through the formidable ghats.
Through the Aryankavu Pass
The highlight of this journey is undoubtedly the stretch between Thenmala in Kerala and Aryankavu on the border with Tamil Nadu. As the train climbs into the Aryankavu Pass, the world outside the Vistadome windows transforms into an emerald paradise. The railway line runs parallel to the Kallada River and the Kollam-Thirumangalam highway, offering a multi-layered view of the landscape. Passengers can witness dense forests teeming with biodiversity, and during the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons, countless waterfalls cascade down the hillsides, some appearing just metres from the tracks. The train slows down through this section, with stops at small, charming stations like Kazhuthuruthi and Thenmala, allowing travellers to soak in the atmosphere of one of India's most beautiful rail routes.
The Majestic 13-Arch Bridge
An engineering marvel that commands attention is the 'Pathimoonu Kannara Palam', or the 13-Arch Bridge, located near Kazhuthurutty. This century-old viaduct, standing nearly 100 feet tall, is a stunning example of colonial architecture, originally built using only limestone, jaggery, and rock. The train's passage over this iconic bridge is a cinematic moment. On one side, you see the bridge's elegant arches stretching across the valley, and on the other, the vast expanse of the Western Ghats. The bridge connects two hillocks and is nestled between two tunnels, making the approach and departure equally thrilling. Its historical significance and picturesque setting have made it a popular location for film shoots and a bucket-list sight for railway enthusiasts.
How to Plan Your Journey
The Vistadome coach is attached to the Madurai-Guruvayur Express (16327/16328) and runs on select days of the week—Thursdays to Sundays from Madurai and Fridays to Mondays from Guruvayur. Bookings are open on the IRCTC portal under the 'Executive Chair Car' (ECC) or 'EV' class. Given the popularity of Vistadome services on other scenic routes and the limited-time nature of this run, it is advisable to book tickets well in advance. The journey is particularly stunning during and just after the monsoon season when the forests are at their greenest and waterfalls are in full flow. The train schedule includes brief halts at several smaller stations along the ghat section, purposefully designed to let passengers fully appreciate the region's natural splendour.
