For School Students: Catch Them Young
ISRO's philosophy is to nurture scientific curiosity from a young age. The flagship initiative for this is the YUva VIgyani KAryakram (YUVIKA), or the Young Scientist Programme. This two-week residential programme is designed for students who have completed
Class 9. Selected students get the incredible opportunity to visit ISRO centres, listen to lectures from senior scientists, and participate in hands-on activities like model rocketry and assembling DIY satellite kits. The programme aims to provide a foundational understanding of space science and technology, with a special preference given to students from rural areas to ensure broad participation. Beyond YUVIKA, ISRO also organizes various outreach activities like exhibitions and the 'Space on Wheels' bus, which brings the excitement of space exploration to schools across the country.
At the University Level: Internships and Projects
For those in higher education, ISRO offers more structured engagement through its Internship Scheme and Student Project Trainee Scheme. The Internship Scheme is a short-term program, lasting up to 45 days, open to undergraduate, postgraduate, and even recent graduates in science and technology fields. To be eligible, students typically need a minimum aggregate of 60% or a CGPA of 6.32. The Student Project Trainee Scheme is designed for longer durations, allowing students to complete academic projects required by their curriculum. For example, a B.Tech student who has completed their sixth semester can apply for a project of at least 45 days, while an M.Tech student can apply for a 120-day project after their first semester. It is important to note that these opportunities are generally unpaid, offering valuable experience rather than a stipend. Applications are managed by individual ISRO centres, so aspirants should check the websites of centres relevant to their field, like the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) or the U R Rao Satellite Centre (URSC).
Digital Doorways: Online Learning with ISRO
In today's digital age, physical distance is no longer a barrier to learning from ISRO. The organization runs a robust digital outreach, primarily through the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS) in Dehradun. The IIRS Outreach Programme offers live and interactive online courses as well as e-learning modules on space technology and its applications. These courses are available to students, academics, and professionals, strengthening the nation's capacity in geospatial technology. Additionally, ISRO maintains a dedicated STEM portal that includes certified online courses, video sessions with scientists, a virtual museum, and even a space quiz to test your knowledge. These resources make it possible for anyone with an internet connection to start their space education journey.
Building Satellites and Sharpening Skills
For those with a more hands-on ambition, ISRO actively encourages students to build their own satellites. The Student Satellite Programme provides a framework and guidance for universities to design, develop, and launch small satellites. This initiative helps create a skilled workforce and future vendors for the space industry. Another key capacity-building program is UNNATI (UNispace Nanosatellite Assembly & Training). While this program is primarily for international participants, its existence highlights ISRO's role as a global educator in space technology, offering intensive training on assembling, integrating, and testing nanosatellites.
The Ultimate Goal: A Career at ISRO
Many of these educational pathways are designed to prepare the next generation of scientists and engineers for a career at ISRO. The most direct academic route is through the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) in Thiruvananthapuram, which functions directly under the Department of Space. Admission is highly competitive, based on JEE Advanced scores, and exceptional graduates may be directly absorbed into ISRO. The more common path is through the ISRO Centralised Recruitment Board (ICRB) exam, which hires graduates in fields like mechanical, electronics, and computer science engineering. A strong academic record, with at least 65% marks, is typically required to be eligible for these roles. Whether through a school program, a university internship, or direct recruitment, the pathways to ISRO are clear for those with dedication and a passion for the final frontier.
