The Big News: A Direct Mumbai-Toronto Link
Air India has announced a major enhancement for India-Canada travellers: a new seasonal, non-stop service between Mumbai and Toronto. Starting October 25, 2026, and running until March 26, 2027, the flight will operate three times a week. This is a game-changer
for passengers from western and southern India, who can now bypass layovers in Delhi or the Middle East. Air India will be the only carrier operating this direct route during the winter season, utilising a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. This move adds nearly 2,000 seats weekly, catering to the strong demand from tourists, students, and those visiting friends and family. The introduction of this flight complements Air India's existing routes from Delhi to Toronto and Vancouver, significantly strengthening connectivity.
First Step: Navigating the Visa Process
Before you book your ticket, the first crucial step is securing a Canadian Visitor Visa, also known as a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV). The entire application process for Indian citizens is now handled online through the official Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) portal. Be prepared to provide mandatory biometrics (fingerprints and a photo) at a designated Visa Application Centre (VAC). Key documents include a valid passport, proof of sufficient funds, a detailed travel itinerary, and evidence of strong ties to India, such as employment letters or property ownership, to show you intend to return. Processing times typically range from 30 to 60 days but can vary based on application volumes, so it is highly recommended to apply well in advance of your planned travel dates.
When to Go & What to See
With Toronto as your entry point, Eastern Canada is at your doorstep. The best time to visit this region is generally from late spring to early autumn (May to October). Summer months (June to August) offer warm weather perfect for exploring cities and attending festivals, though it's also the peak tourist season with higher prices. September and October bring stunning fall foliage and fewer crowds. A classic itinerary from Toronto includes a day trip to the magnificent Niagara Falls. From there, you can explore the vibrant, multicultural streets of Toronto itself, perhaps venturing up the CN Tower for panoramic views. For a longer trip, consider taking a train or a short flight to the French-Canadian hubs of Montréal and Québec City, known for their European charm and rich history.
Smart Planning for a Seamless Trip
Canada is a large and diverse country, and smart planning can make your trip smoother and more affordable. Because of the vast distances, it's wise to focus on one region—either the East or the West—for a single trip to avoid spending too much time and money on internal travel. Canada is a largely cashless society, so carrying a forex card or a credit card with tap-to-pay functionality is essential. When budgeting, remember that advertised prices for goods and services do not include sales tax, which is added at the point of payment. Furthermore, tipping at a rate of 15-20% is customary in restaurants. Finally, travel insurance is not just an option but a necessity. Healthcare for visitors can be very expensive, and comprehensive insurance provides a crucial safety net for any unforeseen circumstances.
