The long train journey between Bengaluru and Goa is about to get significantly shorter and more scenic. The Railway Board has approved a new Vande Bharat Express that will cover the distance in approximately 13 hours, a welcome upgrade for travellers.
Your New Express to the Coast
Indian Railways has officially sanctioned the Yesvantpur-Madgaon Vande Bharat Express, a new service that promises to revolutionize travel between India's tech capital and its most popular coastal destination. The journey from Yesvantpur in Bengaluru to Madgaon in Goa is now slated to take approximately 13 hours and 20 minutes, with the return trip being slightly faster at around 12 hours and 55 minutes. This new train, operating under numbers 26655 and 26656, will run six days a week, providing a much-needed, reliable daytime connection. The service from Yesvantpur will not operate on Wednesdays, and the return service from Madgaon will be unavailable on Thursdays. This development is a significant improvement over existing train services, which often take 15 to 17 hours to cover the same route.
A Journey Through the Scenic Western Ghats
Beyond just speed, the new Vande Bharat service is being celebrated for its picturesque route. The train will travel via Mangaluru Junction, traversing the stunning Western Ghats, including the lush Sakleshpur-Subrahmanya Road section. Passengers will be treated to panoramic views of dense green forests, rolling hills, and dramatic valley bridges, turning the commute itself into a part of the holiday experience. The train will make 12 commercial stops, connecting several key towns in Karnataka's interior and coastal belts before reaching Goa. Key halts include Hassan, Sakleshpur, Mangaluru Junction, Udupi, Murdeshwar, and Karwar, offering unprecedented connectivity for travellers heading to these popular tourist and pilgrimage destinations.
How Was This Speed-Up Achieved?
This significant reduction in travel time is the result of long-term infrastructure upgrades undertaken by the South Western Railway. The introduction of this service was made possible by the completion of electrification work on the Bengaluru-Mangaluru railway route, which finished in December 2025 after starting in December 2023. Running trains on electric power, as opposed to diesel, allows for faster acceleration and more consistent speeds. Furthermore, the extensive project of doubling the railway track between Hospet and Vasco da Gama, a plan sanctioned back in 2010-11, has been instrumental. Eliminating the bottlenecks of a single-track line, where trains often had to wait for others to pass, allows for a smoother and faster flow of traffic.
Planning Your Trip: Timings and Launch
According to the approved schedule, train number 26655 will depart from Yesvantpur at 7:35 AM and arrive at Madgaon at 8:55 PM. For the return journey, train number 26656 will leave Madgaon at 8:20 AM and reach Yesvantpur at 9:15 PM. While the Railway Board's approval was issued on October 30, 2026, the official launch date is expected to be announced soon, with reports suggesting the service could begin as early as the third week of November 2026. With the launch imminent, the existing Madgaon-Mangaluru Central Vande Bharat Express is set to be discontinued to make way for this extended and more comprehensive route. Travellers are advised to keep an eye on the official Indian Railways booking portal for the final launch date and fare details.
