As of mid-2026, India is home to over 450 space startups, a staggering increase from fewer than ten just six years ago. This new ecosystem is vibrant and diverse, tackling every part of the space value chain. Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace became the first Indian private company to launch a rocket, Vikram-S, and is on the cusp of orbital launches with its Vikram-1 vehicle. Chennai-based Agnikul Cosmos is pioneering 3D-printed rocket engines for its 'Agnibaan' rocket, designed for small satellite launches. Then there is Pixxel, a Bengaluru startup building a constellation of the world's highest-resolution hyperspectral imaging satellites, which can see the earth in unprecedented detail to monitor everything from crop health to environmental hazards. Companies like Dhruva Space are focusing on the full stack of satellite solutions, from manufacturing small satellites to offering 'satellite-as-a-service' platforms. This is not an exhaustive list, but it illustrates the breadth of ambition, from launch services to data analytics.
It's Not Just Rocket Science Anymore
The most significant change is the variety of jobs being created. While propulsion and avionics engineers are still in high demand, these startups are hiring for roles that barely existed in the Indian space sector a decade ago. A look at the careers pages of Skyroot, Agnikul, Pixxel, and Dhruva Space reveals a wide spectrum of opportunities. There are openings for software engineers to develop mission control and ground systems, computer vision scientists to analyze satellite data, and embedded systems programmers. Beyond pure tech, there is a growing need for professionals in business development, legal and regulatory affairs, procurement, marketing, and finance. These companies operate like fast-moving tech firms, requiring a blend of deep technical expertise and agile business acumen.
The Fuel for This New Engine
This transformation is being actively fueled by government policy and private investment. The establishment of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) created a single-window agency to facilitate, authorize, and supervise private space activities. IN-SPACe helps startups access ISRO's world-class testing facilities and technical expertise, significantly lowering the barrier to entry. This policy clarity has given investors confidence. Indian space startups have raised around USD 390 million in the last three years alone, with the government also committing to a venture capital fund to further support this growth. This influx of capital allows companies to offer competitive salaries and invest in long-term research and development, making them attractive employers for top talent.
