On August 2nd, Jaipur is set to host its largest pet carnival, an event designed to be a one-stop platform for pet owners. While the day promises fun activities, it's anchored to a significant directive from the Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC). The
JMC has launched a mandatory registration drive for all pet dogs and cats, with a deadline of September 30, 2026. This carnival serves as a friendly and accessible kick-off point for the 60-day registration window that began on August 1. The event, held at IDB, Durgapura, offers on-the-spot licensing, free anti-rabies vaccinations, health check-ups, microchipping, and even adoption services for Indie dogs.
Why Pet Registration Is Now Mandatory
This city-wide registration drive isn't just about paperwork. It's a direct response to a Rajasthan High Court directive aimed at managing public health and safety concerns related to stray dogs and animal bites. By creating a comprehensive database of pets, the JMC aims to track vaccination records, control the spread of diseases like rabies, and promote responsible pet ownership. JMC Commissioner Om Kasera emphasised that the goal is not to penalize owners but to improve public health and animal welfare. The data collected will help the city create a safer environment for both residents and the animals themselves.
The Benefits for Jaipur and Its Pets
A complete pet registry offers numerous advantages for urban planning. It allows municipal bodies to understand the pet population's size and needs, leading to better allocation of resources for veterinary infrastructure, such as clinics and shelters. For pet owners, registration provides a legal record of ownership, which can be crucial in case of disputes or if a pet gets lost. The system also ensures that pets receive their mandatory anti-rabies shots, with the first due at three months of age and annual boosters thereafter. This proactive approach to health monitoring is a cornerstone of the JMC's plan to make Jaipur a rabies-free city.
What Pet Parents Need to Know
For a one-time annual fee of ₹1,000 plus GST, owners can register their pets at the carnival or through other channels before the September 30 deadline. The renewal fee is set at ₹500 plus GST annually. Pet owners attending the camp should bring their pet, a passport-sized photograph of the animal, their Aadhaar card, and the pet's latest vaccination records. Failing to register a pet by the deadline could result in a fine of up to ₹5,000. The new regulations also extend to breeders and pet shops, who must now register with the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) and ensure any animal sold is already registered with the JMC.
