Understanding the Route
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR), affectionately known as the 'toy train', covers a 46-kilometre track from Mettupalayam (MTP) on the plains to Udhagamandalam (UAM), or Ooty, high in the hills. The journey takes approximately five hours uphill. What
makes it an engineering marvel is the unique rack and pinion system used on the steepest section of the track between Mettupalayam and Coonoor (ONR). This is the only rack railway in India. This section is powered by a classic steam locomotive, which pushes the train up the sharp inclines, passing through 16 tunnels and over 250 bridges. At Coonoor, the steam engine is replaced by a diesel locomotive for the final, gentler ascent to Ooty.
Choosing Your Journey
You have two main options for experiencing the NMR. The full journey from Mettupalayam to Ooty offers the complete heritage experience, including the iconic steam engine section. This is the most sought-after route, departing Mettupalayam at 7:10 AM. However, if time is short or tickets are unavailable, the section from Coonoor to Ooty is a fantastic alternative. This shorter, one-hour ride is serviced by more frequent diesel trains and still provides breathtaking views of the rolling tea gardens and Nilgiri peaks. Many travellers find the Mettupalayam to Coonoor stretch to be the most scenic and dramatic part of the journey. How to Book Your Tickets
Booking tickets for the NMR requires advance planning, as seats sell out quickly, often months in advance, especially during peak season (April-June and October-December). The most reliable way to book is through the official Indian Railways website, IRCTC. It's crucial to use the correct station codes: MTP for Mettupalayam, UAM for Udhagamandalam (Ooty), and ONR for Coonoor. Searching for 'Ooty' will not yield any results. Bookings typically open 120 days in advance. A small number of unreserved tickets are sold at the station just before departure, but this is a risky option as queues form extremely early, sometimes before 4 AM for the 7:10 AM departure. The train offers First Class, with cushioned seats, and Second Sitting, with wooden benches. First Class has very limited seats (around 16 on the main train), so booking early is essential.
The Onboard Experience
The journey is defined by its leisurely pace, averaging just 10 km/h. This allows you to fully immerse yourself in the changing landscape, from the paddy fields near Mettupalayam to the dense forests and finally, the vast, manicured tea plantations that carpet the hills around Coonoor and Ooty. The quaint blue and cream wooden carriages have large windows, perfect for photography and enjoying the cool mountain air. There is no pantry car, so it's wise to carry your own snacks and water for the journey. You'll pass through charming, old-world stations like Hillgrove and Wellington, and the train makes a brief stop at Coonoor where you can watch the engine change.
Tips for a Memorable Trip
To make the most of your trip, arrive at the station at least 30-45 minutes before departure. Dress in layers, as the temperature can be warm in Mettupalayam but will drop significantly as you climb towards Ooty. If you're connecting from other cities, the Nilgiri Express from Chennai is timed to arrive in Mettupalayam early in the morning, allowing for a seamless transfer to the toy train. Coimbatore, about an hour away, is the nearest airport and a major railway hub. Remember that there are no restrooms on the train itself, so use the facilities at the station before you board. The journey is not just a means of transport but the destination itself—a slow, nostalgic ride through some of India's most stunning mountain scenery.
