The Five Upgraded Train Services
The enhanced services have been implemented by the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) and cover a mix of superfast and premium trains. The five trains receiving this upgrade are the New Jalpaiguri–Patna Vande Bharat Express, the New Jalpaiguri–Guwahati
Vande Bharat Express, the Kamakhya–SMVT Bengaluru Express, the Guwahati–Kolkata Garib Rath Express, and the Dibrugarh–Mumbai LTT Express. The rollout for these services began in mid-October 2026, marking a significant step towards modernizing the passenger experience on these crucial routes.
A New Standard in Cleanliness
For years, inconsistent cleanliness has been a persistent issue for many railway passengers. This new initiative directly addresses this by introducing a more robust and accountable On-Board Housekeeping Service (OBHS). The enhanced service includes regular, scheduled cleaning of coaches, doorways, aisles, and windows throughout the journey. Special attention is being given to washroom maintenance, with dedicated teams tasked to ensure hygiene and water availability. The system is moving beyond manual checks, incorporating technology to ensure the work is done properly. This includes the use of AI-based assessments and geo-tagged verification to monitor cleaning activities in real-time.
Resolving Complaints in Real-Time
One of the most significant improvements for passengers is the promise of faster complaint resolution. Under the new system, the railway has set a target of resolving passenger complaints regarding onboard services within two hours. Dedicated onboard teams are the first point of contact for issues ranging from cleaning and waste disposal to basic technical assistance and linen distribution. If an issue is not resolved within the two-hour window, it is automatically escalated to higher-level railway authorities for immediate attention. This structured approach replaces older, less reliable methods and aims to create a more responsive and accountable service environment. Passengers can also provide real-time feedback and star ratings, which helps officials track performance and service quality.
How Technology Drives the Change
Technology is the backbone of this upgraded service. The entire system is built on a framework of digital monitoring to improve accountability. Onboard staff attendance and activities are tracked digitally, and centralized monitoring systems allow railway officials to have a clear overview of the services being delivered on each train. This initiative appears to be an advanced version of previous schemes like 'Coach Mitra', which was a single-window interface for passengers to register coach-related requirements via SMS or an app. The addition of AI assessments and real-time passenger feedback loops represents a major evolution, moving from a request-based model to a proactive and continuously monitored system.
