Start with Paw Protection
A walk in the rain is often unavoidable, but what your pet brings back on their paws requires immediate attention. Puddles and wet roads can harbour bacteria and other contaminants that can lead to infections. Make it a non-negotiable rule to clean and dry
your pet’s paws after every single outing. Use a soft towel and lukewarm water to gently wipe away mud and grime, paying close attention to the spaces between their toes where moisture loves to hide. A thorough drying is crucial, as damp paws are a perfect breeding ground for painful fungal and bacterial infections. For added protection, consider trimming the fur between their paw pads to prevent mud from getting caked in.
Master Monsoon Coat Care
A perpetually damp coat is one of the biggest health risks for pets during the monsoon. It can lead to a variety of skin issues, including hot spots and fungal infections, often identified by a musty smell or excessive scratching. The solution is a consistent drying routine. After any exposure to rain, towel-dry your pet thoroughly, focusing on the belly and areas with skin folds. For pets with thick coats, a hairdryer on a low-heat setting can ensure they are completely dry. While it might seem intuitive to bathe them more often, over-bathing can strip their skin of natural protective oils. Instead, stick to a less frequent bathing schedule (perhaps every two to three weeks) and brush their coat daily to remove debris and improve air circulation to the skin.
Guard Against Ticks and Fleas
The high humidity of the monsoon season signals a boom in parasite populations. Fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes thrive in these conditions, increasing the risk of infestation and the diseases they carry. This is not the season to become complacent with preventative care. Ensure your pet is up-to-date on their vet-recommended tick and flea treatments, whether topical or oral. Conduct regular checks of their fur, especially after they have been outdoors, no matter how brief the trip. Pay close attention to warm, hidden areas like the ears, neck, armpits, and between the toes, as these are common hiding spots for parasites.
Rethink Their Diet and Water
Just like humans, pets can experience digestive issues during the monsoon. Reduced physical activity and the damp weather can sometimes lead to a sluggish digestive system. Some vets recommend shifting to lighter, easily digestible meals to support their gut health. More importantly, you must be vigilant about their drinking water. Stagnant rainwater puddles are teeming with harmful bacteria and parasites that can cause serious water-borne diseases like leptospirosis and giardia. Never allow your pet to drink from puddles. During this season, it is safest to provide them exclusively with boiled or filtered water at home, and to change their water bowl daily.
Keep Your Home Clean and Fresh
Keeping your home clean with a pet during the monsoon requires a bit of strategy. The combination of wet fur and muddy paws can quickly lead to a damp, musty smell. Designate an entryway or 'mudroom' area where you can wipe down your pet before they enter the main part of the house. Use highly absorbent doormats to catch as much moisture as possible. It’s also important to wash your pet’s bedding more frequently, ensuring it is completely dry to prevent bacterial growth. When cleaning floors, opt for pet-safe disinfectants. Good ventilation is also key; open windows whenever the rain stops to allow fresh air to circulate and combat indoor humidity.
Encourage Indoor Play
Shorter walks and fewer outdoor adventures can lead to boredom and pent-up energy, which may result in destructive behaviour like chewing or scratching. It's crucial to keep your pet mentally and physically stimulated indoors. Engage them with interactive puzzle toys, which make them work for their treats. A simple game of hide-and-seek with their favourite toy or indoor fetch with a soft ball can burn off energy. Short training sessions to practice old commands or learn new tricks are also excellent for mental stimulation and strengthening your bond.
