Navigating the Festive Rush
Every year, during the months of October and November, millions of people travel from major metropolitan hubs like Mumbai to their hometowns to celebrate festivals such as Durga Puja, Diwali, and Chhath Puja with their families. This leads to an overwhelming
demand for train tickets, with regular services getting fully booked months in advance. To prevent chaos and provide much-needed relief to passengers, Indian Railways, through its zonal divisions, introduces special train services on high-demand routes. These temporary trains are crucial for accommodating the surge of travelers and ensuring people can make it home for the celebrations. This year, Central Railway is leading the charge with a significant number of additional services.
Your Guide to the 418 Festival Specials
Central Railway has confirmed it will run 418 special train trips to handle the passenger rush for the 2026 festival season. These services will primarily originate from major terminals in and around Mumbai, including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), and nearby stations like Pune and Nagpur, running through October and November. The announcement, made by the Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway, aims to connect Mumbai with numerous destinations across several states. It's important to note that these trains operate with special fares, which may be slightly higher than regular train tickets. Western Railway has also announced its own set of special trains focusing on destinations in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
Major Routes and Destinations
The 418 special services cover a wide range of popular destinations, ensuring connectivity to North, East, and South India. Key routes announced by Central Railway from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region include daily services between CSMT and Gorakhpur, which will have a total of 64 trips. There are also multiple weekly and bi-weekly trains to other high-demand destinations in Uttar Pradesh, such as Banaras and Mau, from LTT. For those traveling south, weekly AC special services will operate between CSMT and Chennai Beach. Other significant routes include special trains from CSMT to Nagpur, Kolhapur, and Latur. Western Railway is bolstering this effort with services from Mumbai Central and Bandra Terminus to cities like Danapur, Gorakhpur, and Subedarganj.
How and When to Book Your Tickets
Booking for these festival special trains opened in phases starting September 27 and 28, 2026. Tickets can be booked through the official IRCTC website (irctc.co.in), the IRCTC Rail Connect mobile app, and at all computerised railway reservation centres. Due to extremely high demand, these tickets are often sold out within hours, if not minutes, of bookings opening. It is crucial to be prepared. One effective strategy is to create a 'Master List' of passengers on your IRCTC profile beforehand. This allows you to auto-fill passenger details quickly during the booking process, saving precious seconds. Also, be flexible with your travel dates by a day or two, as special trains may run on specific days of the week.
Tips for a Smooth and Confirmed Journey
If you find that your preferred train is already on a waiting list, don't lose hope immediately. Monitor your PNR status regularly, as confirmations often happen closer to the departure date due to cancellations. For these special services, which are identified by a 5-digit number starting with '0', the advance reservation period (ARP) can vary, so it's essential to check the official notification for each train. Tatkal quota may not be available on all special trains, as many already operate on dynamic or special fares. Always ensure you are booking through official channels to avoid scams. When travelling, arrive at the station well in advance and be prepared for large crowds. Finally, only travel with a valid, confirmed ticket to avoid any inconvenience during your journey.
