What Exactly Is an Equinox?
Twice a year, in March and September, the Earth reaches a point in its orbit where its axis isn't tilted toward or away from the sun. During this event, called an equinox, the sun shines directly over the Earth's equator. The result is that both the Northern
and Southern Hemispheres receive the sun's rays almost equally. The very word "equinox" comes from the Latin words "aequus" (equal) and "nox" (night), hinting at the idea of an equal night and day. For us in India and the rest of the Northern Hemisphere, the September equinox is known as the autumnal equinox, heralding the start of autumn. Meanwhile, for everyone in the Southern Hemisphere, it's the vernal (or spring) equinox, marking the beginning of spring.

The Science of the Tilt
The reason we have equinoxes—and seasons at all—is because the Earth is tilted on its axis by about 23.5 degrees. Think of our planet like a spinning top that's leaning to one side as it circles the sun. This tilt means that for most of the year, one hemisphere is pointed more directly towards the sun, receiving more direct light and heat (summer), while the other is tilted away, getting less direct rays (winter). The equinoxes are the two points in the orbit where this tilt is perfectly sideways relative to the sun. On this day, the line that separates day from night, known as the terminator, runs straight from the North Pole to the South Pole, dividing the Earth into nearly equal halves of light and darkness.
Why Not Exactly 12 Hours of Daylight?
While the name "equinox" suggests equal day and night, it's not quite that simple. On the day of the equinox, most places on Earth will experience slightly more than 12 hours of daylight. This happens for two main reasons. First, sunrise is defined as the moment the top edge of the sun appears over the horizon, and sunset is when its last edge disappears. This definition alone adds a few extra minutes of daylight. Second, Earth's atmosphere acts like a lens, bending sunlight. This phenomenon, called atmospheric refraction, allows us to see the sun for several minutes before it has geometrically risen and for several minutes after it has set, adding even more time to the daylight hours. The day when day and night are truly equal is called the "equilux," and it occurs a few days after the autumnal equinox in the Northern Hemisphere.
Cultural Significance in India and Beyond
The autumnal equinox is more than just an astronomical event; it holds deep cultural meaning worldwide. Historically, it's a time of harvest and giving thanks for nature's abundance. In India, the period around the autumnal equinox is associated with important festivals. Most notably, it aligns with Sharad Navaratri, a nine-night festival honouring the goddess Durga and celebrating the victory of good over evil. This is a time for spiritual reflection, fasting, and vibrant community celebrations like the Garba dance. In Ayurveda, the equinox signifies a key seasonal shift, a time to adjust diets and routines to stay in harmony with nature's changing rhythm as we move from the fiery pitta season of summer to the airy vata season of autumn.
