The Mountain Classic: Mettupalayam to Ooty

on the plains to the hill station of Ooty is a five-hour spectacle of engineering and natural beauty. Using a unique rack and pinion system to climb the sharp gradients, the train passes through 16 tunnels, over 250 bridges, and around 208 curves. Passengers are treated to panoramic views of dense shola forests, vibrant tea plantations, and mist-covered valleys. The slow pace of the train, often no faster than a brisk walk, allows you to soak in every detail of the changing landscape, making the journey as memorable as the destination itself.
The Green Tunnel Route: Sakleshpur to Kukke Subramanya
Often called the 'Green Route', the railway line between Sakleshpur and Kukke Subramanya in Karnataka offers an immersive journey through the heart of the Western Ghats. This 56-kilometre stretch is a marvel of railway engineering, featuring 58 tunnels and 109 bridges carved through the dense, hilly terrain. Especially during and after the monsoon, the landscape is a riot of green, with numerous waterfalls cascading right next to the tracks. The train plunges into near-total darkness in the tunnels before emerging into bright, verdant valleys, creating a dramatic play of light and shadow. Part of the larger Bengaluru to Mangaluru line, this section provides some of the most stunning daytime views available on Indian Railways, with Vistadome coaches often recommended for the best sightseeing experience.
The Waterfall Wonder: Vasco da Gama to Londa
This journey, which connects Goa with Karnataka, is famed for one spectacular, unmissable highlight: the Dudhsagar Falls. As the train makes its way through the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary, it crosses a bridge that offers a direct, breathtaking view of one of India's tallest waterfalls. The sight of the massive, four-tiered waterfall, whose name translates to 'Sea of Milk', crashing down right beside the tracks is an unforgettable experience, particularly during the monsoon when it is at its most powerful. The journey itself is a beautiful transition from Goa's coastal plains into the lush, wild hills of the Ghats. The Heritage Trail: Kollam to Sengottai
Connecting Kerala and Tamil Nadu, the Kollam to Sengottai line is a journey back in time. This metre-gauge line, now converted, traverses the southern reaches of the Western Ghats through what is known as the Cardamom Hills. The route is a testament to colonial-era engineering, with its most iconic feature being the 13 Arch Bridge (Pathimoonu Kannara Palam) at Kazhuthurutty. The train ride takes you through a landscape rich with spice plantations, dense forests, and winding mountain passes. It’s a relatively short journey of about three to four hours, but it packs in a remarkable amount of scenery, showcasing the tranquil and timeless beauty of this historic trade route.
