What Exactly is the MDAC?
The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) is a mandatory online form that has replaced the traditional paper-based landing cards. Introduced by the Malaysian Immigration Department, its purpose is to streamline and speed up the immigration process at airports
and other entry points. Think of it not as a visa, but as a pre-arrival registration of your travel details. It collects your personal information, passport data, and accommodation plans. This digital system helps enhance border security and allows for a smoother clearance experience. The MDAC is completely free of charge and must be submitted through the official government portal. Be aware that it is valid for a single entry only; if you leave and re-enter Malaysia, you must submit a new MDAC.
Is It Mandatory for Indian Tourists?
Yes, absolutely. All Indian passport holders traveling to Malaysia must complete the MDAC. The visa-free facility, which allows a stay of up to 30 days for tourism, does not exempt you from this requirement. This rule applies to nearly all foreign nationals, regardless of their visa status. Assuming the visa waiver is all you need is a common mistake that can lead to delays or, in worst-case scenarios, denial of entry. In simple terms: the visa-free status is your permission to enter, while the MDAC is your mandatory digital declaration that you are arriving. Every person in your travel group, including children, needs their own separate MDAC submission.
How to Fill the MDAC: A Simple Guide
Completing the MDAC is straightforward. You must submit it online within the three days leading up to your arrival in Malaysia. For instance, if you land on August 20th, you can fill the form anytime from August 17th onwards. First, visit the official MDAC portal run by the Malaysian Immigration Department. Click 'Register' and begin filling in your details. You will need your full name (as on your passport), passport number and expiry date, date of birth, nationality, email address, and mobile number. Next, provide your travel information, including your date of arrival, mode of transport (e.g., flight number), and where you are arriving from. You'll also need to enter the address of your accommodation in Malaysia. If you're staying at multiple hotels, providing the address of the first one is sufficient. Always double-check every detail for accuracy before submitting.
After Submission: What to Expect
Once you submit the form, you should receive a confirmation sent to your registered email address. While immigration officers can verify your submission electronically, it is highly recommended to save a digital copy (as a PDF or screenshot) of this confirmation on your phone. Upon arrival, especially on your first visit after this system was introduced, you may need to verify your passport at a manual counter. However, Indian nationals are among the travellers from 63 countries eligible to use the autogate or e-gate system at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA 1 and KLIA 2). Using the e-gates can significantly speed up your immigration clearance, allowing you to bypass the long queues at manual counters. To be eligible, you must have submitted the MDAC correctly.
Key Documents and Common Mistakes
While the MDAC is digital, you still need to have your physical documents in order. Ensure your passport has at least six months of validity from your date of entry. You should also carry proof of a confirmed return flight ticket and your hotel bookings. Immigration officers may ask to see these. One of the most common mistakes is using unofficial third-party websites that may charge a fee for the MDAC service; remember, the official registration is free. Another frequent error is forgetting to submit the form within the correct three-day window. Finally, ensure all details, especially your name and passport number, match your documents perfectly to avoid any issues at immigration.
