Win the War Against Frizz
Humidity is the number one enemy of smooth hair during the monsoon. The excess moisture in the air causes the hair cuticle to swell, resulting in frizz and flyaways. Your first line of defence is to switch to a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo that won't
strip your hair of its natural oils. Follow up with a silicone-free, anti-frizz conditioner or serum. These products create a protective barrier that blocks humidity. Avoid heavy, oily products that will only weigh your hair down. A weekly deep-conditioning mask can also help keep your hair nourished and manageable. Lastly, try not to leave the house with damp hair. Either air-dry it completely or use a blow-dryer on a low heat setting, as wet hair is more susceptible to frizz.
Rethink Your Skincare Strategy
Sticky, greasy skin is a common complaint during the rains. The humidity makes your sebaceous glands work overtime, leading to clogged pores and breakouts. This is the time to swap your heavy, cream-based cleansers and moisturisers for lighter alternatives. Adopt a double-cleansing routine in the evening: start with an oil-based cleanser to dissolve makeup and grime, then follow up with a gentle, foaming face wash. For moisturising, look for non-comedogenic, gel-based products that contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid for hydration without the grease. Incorporating a clay mask into your routine once or twice a week is an excellent way to absorb excess oil and deep-clean your pores. And don't skip the sunscreen! UV rays are present even on cloudy days.
Embrace Waterproof Makeup
There’s nothing worse than getting caught in a downpour only to have your makeup melt down your face. The monsoon is the perfect time to audit your makeup bag and invest in waterproof essentials. A good waterproof mascara and eyeliner are non-negotiable. For your base, consider swapping heavy foundation for a lightweight BB cream or a tinted moisturiser. These provide coverage without feeling heavy or cakey. To ensure your makeup lasts all day, a translucent setting powder can help control shine and lock everything in place. Finish with a few spritzes of a makeup setting spray, which acts as a final seal against humidity and rain.
Don't Neglect Your Feet
Feet are often the most neglected part of a grooming routine, but they bear the brunt of the monsoon. Walking through puddles and wearing damp shoes for extended periods can create a breeding ground for fungal and bacterial infections. The most important rule is to keep your feet as dry as possible. After washing, dry them thoroughly, paying special attention to the spaces between your toes. Dusting them with an anti-fungal powder before putting on socks can work wonders. Opt for open-toed footwear like sandals or floaters whenever possible to allow your feet to breathe. At the end of the day, soak your feet in warm water with a few drops of antiseptic liquid, scrub them clean, and moisturise.
Choose Lighter, Fresher Fragrances
Your favourite heavy, musky perfume might feel overwhelming and cloying in the damp, humid air. The rainy season calls for a shift towards lighter, fresher scents. Think citrusy notes like lemon and bergamot, aquatic notes that evoke the sea, or green notes like tea tree and mint. These fragrances feel uplifting and clean, cutting through the heavy atmosphere without being overpowering. A light body mist can be a great alternative to a strong eau de parfum, providing a subtle hint of fragrance that feels just right for the weather. It’s a small change that makes a big difference in how fresh you feel throughout the day.
