July 2026 was not just dry; it was historically so. The India Meteorological Department's (IMD) city observatory recorded a mere 23mm of rainfall for the entire month. To put that in perspective, this figure marks it as the second-driest July in the last
108 years, surpassed only by the 18.5mm recorded way back in 1918. Normally, Bengaluru expects somewhere between 80mm and 116mm of rain in July. This drastic shortfall turned what should be a core monsoon month into a period of prolonged dry weather, eroding the healthy surplus the city had built up from pre-monsoon showers.
What Turned Off the Taps?
Several meteorological factors conspired to keep Bengaluru dry. Forecasters point to a weak monsoon trough and the absence of strong westerly winds that are responsible for carrying moisture from the Arabian Sea. According to the IMD, an offshore trough that typically brings rain was largely inactive for most of the month. Compounding this, a persistent high-pressure system settled over the region, effectively blocking rain-bearing clouds from reaching the city. The strengthening El Niño phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean is also a major culprit, as it typically suppresses monsoon rainfall over peninsular India.
A City-Centric View of a Wider Problem
The focus on the city's rainfall figures highlights a crucial nuance in monsoon assessment. While the central IMD observatory showed a massive deficit, rainfall can vary significantly across the metropolitan area. For instance, some mid-month reports noted that while the city observatory was virtually dry, areas near the airport had received slightly more rain. This hyper-local focus can sometimes mask the more critical issue: the status of the Cauvery basin catchment areas, which are vital for the city's water supply. The South Interior Karnataka region, which includes Bengaluru and these crucial districts, recorded a significant rainfall deficit of 35% for the season, pointing to a much larger problem. This has raised concerns among farmers and water management bodies who look beyond just the city's weather.
The Ripple Effect on Water and Agriculture
An unusually dry July has immediate and long-term consequences. The most pressing concern is the city's water supply. The poor rainfall has led to lower-than-expected levels in the major reservoirs that feed Bengaluru. Storage in the Cauvery basin reservoirs is significantly lower compared to the same period last year. Early August forecasts suggest a potential revival of monsoon activity, with some rain predicted. However, the overarching forecast from the IMD for August and September points towards below-normal rainfall for the country, influenced by the strengthening El Niño. While a few good spells of rain might provide temporary relief and improve reservoir inflows, experts are cautious. It remains uncertain whether the upcoming weeks can deliver enough rainfall to completely erase the significant deficit left by the exceptionally dry July.
