Understanding the Enemy: Why Hair Frizzes
Before you can defeat frizz, you must understand it. Hair becomes frizzy during the monsoon because of the high humidity. [4] When the air is full of moisture, dry or damaged hair, which has a raised outer layer (the cuticle), tries to absorb this excess
moisture from the atmosphere. [4, 6] This causes the hair shaft to swell unevenly, leading to that puffy, unruly texture we call frizz. [4] Those with naturally curly, wavy, or chemically treated hair are often more prone to this because their hair structure is more susceptible to moisture absorption. [6, 18] The key to controlling frizz, therefore, is to keep your hair hydrated from within and to seal the cuticle to block outside humidity. [7]
Your Anti-Frizz Hair Arsenal
Conquering monsoon frizz starts with the right products and techniques. First, switch to a gentle, sulphate-free, and anti-frizz shampoo and conditioner. [4] Sulphates can strip hair of its natural oils, leaving it more vulnerable to humidity. [4] Look for products with nourishing ingredients like Babassu oil, Argan oil, keratin, or shea butter, which help to smooth the hair cuticle and lock in moisture. [2, 6, 7] A weekly deep-conditioning mask is non-negotiable; it replenishes moisture and repairs damage. [5] After washing, avoid vigorous rubbing with a regular towel. Instead, gently squeeze out excess water with a soft microfiber towel or an old cotton T-shirt to minimize friction and frizz. [7] Applying a leave-in conditioner or a silicone-based anti-frizz serum to damp hair is crucial. [4] These products create a protective barrier that blocks humidity from penetrating the hair shaft. [4] Finally, trade your regular hairbrush for a wide-toothed comb, especially when your hair is wet, to prevent breakage and static. [6]
Battling Monsoon Sweat and Shine
Just as humidity affects hair, it also sends our skin's oil glands into overdrive, leading to excessive sweat and a greasy-looking complexion. [15, 23] This damp environment can become a breeding ground for bacteria, leading to clogged pores, acne breakouts, and even fungal infections. [19, 20] The goal for monsoon skincare is to control excess oil and sweat without stripping the skin of its essential moisture. Skipping moisturiser is a common mistake that can backfire; dehydrated skin often produces even more oil to compensate. [10, 11] The strategy is to keep things light, clean, and protected.
Your Monsoon Skincare and Makeup Strategy
Start by switching to a gentle, gel-based or salicylic acid cleanser to dissolve oil without being harsh. [10, 16] Follow this with a lightweight, non-comedogenic, water-based or gel moisturiser. [11, 13] Ingredients like hyaluronic acid are excellent as they provide hydration without feeling heavy. [17] Niacinamide is another hero ingredient for humid weather, as it helps regulate sebum production and minimise the appearance of pores. [10, 17] And don't forget sunscreen—even on cloudy days, UV rays are present, so a lightweight, oil-free SPF 30+ is essential. [10, 22] For makeup, less is more. Swap heavy, cream-based foundations for lightweight options like a BB cream or a waterproof liquid foundation. [3, 14] Opt for powder formulas over creams for blush and highlighters, as they absorb oil better. [3] Waterproof or water-resistant mascara and eyeliner are your best friends to avoid the dreaded 'raccoon eyes'. [8, 9] Finally, set your look with a translucent powder or a setting spray to lock everything in place and combat shine throughout the day. [8, 14]
