Planning a trip to Lakshadweep has become significantly easier. In a major move to boost tourism, the administration removed some of the biggest hurdles for Indian tourists in April 2026. You no longer need a local sponsor from the islands to vouch for your
visit. Additionally, the requirement to obtain a Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) from your local police station has been eliminated for tourist applications. This change dramatically speeds up the process, as security verification is now handled internally by the Lakshadweep Police after you submit your application. However, the entry permit itself remains mandatory for all non-residents.
Step 1: Apply on the Official ePermit Portal
The entire application process is handled online through the official ePermit portal: epermit.utl.gov.in. This is the only legitimate website for applications. First, you'll need to create an account with your basic details like name, email, and mobile number. Once registered, you can start a new application for a 'Tourist Permit'. The online form is straightforward and allows you to apply for up to six people in a single application. You will be asked to provide your travel dates, the specific islands you plan to visit, and details of your accommodation.
Step 2: Gather Your Essential Documents
While the PCC is no longer needed, you still need to have a few key documents ready to upload. Ensure you have clear, scanned copies of the following for each traveler: a valid photo ID (Aadhaar Card is preferred, but Voter ID or Passport also work), and a recent passport-sized photograph. You will also need to provide proof of your travel arrangements, which includes your confirmed flight or ship tickets and proof of your hotel or resort booking. Having these documents ready before you start the application will make the process much smoother.
Step 3: Submit and Track Your Application
After filling in all the details and uploading your documents, you will need to pay the permit fee and a green tax online. Once submitted, your application goes for verification. You can track the status of your application directly on the ePermit portal. The administration advises applying at least 14 days before your intended travel date to allow sufficient time for processing. Typically, the approval process can take anywhere from 7 to 15 working days. Once approved, your ePermit will be sent to your registered email address.
Tips for a Speedy and Smooth Approval
To ensure your application is processed quickly and without issues, follow these tips. First, apply well in advance, especially if you are travelling during the peak season from October to March. Some experts even suggest starting the process 4-6 weeks ahead of your trip. Double-check that all your uploaded documents are clear and legible, as blurry files are a common reason for rejection. It is also recommended to book your flights and accommodation before applying, as these confirmations are a required part of the application. However, to avoid cancellation fees, some travel experts suggest waiting for the permit before booking. A balanced approach is to book refundable options if possible. Finally, make sure the islands listed on your permit application match your booking itinerary, as you are only allowed to visit the islands specified on your approved permit.
