The Good News: Visa-Free Entry Remains
Let's clear the air: Thailand is not ending visa-free travel for Indian passport holders. On July 14, 2026, the Thai cabinet confirmed that Indians will continue to be able to enter the country without a visa. This decision reverses earlier, more confusing
proposals from May 2026 that suggested the visa-free scheme might be scrapped entirely. The uncertainty from those proposals led to a drop in tourist arrivals from India, a key market for Thailand, prompting the government to provide this welcome clarification. So, if you were concerned about needing to apply for a visa or pay for a visa-on-arrival, you can rest easy.
What Is the 'Latest Rule Change'?
The main change is the duration of the visa-free stay. Previously, Indians could enjoy a temporary 60-day visa-free stay. Under the new rules, this has been standardized to a 30-day visa-free period. This change is part of a broader overhaul of Thailand's visa system, which saw the 60-day exemption for 93 countries revoked due to concerns about misuse and security. Instead of reverting to a paid visa-on-arrival system as some feared, Indian travellers have been placed in the 30-day visa-free category. This is considered an upgrade, as it removes the cost and paperwork associated with the visa-on-arrival process. Essentially, Thailand has found a middle ground to balance security with the need to attract tourists.
Why 30 Days Is Still a Sweet Deal
While a reduction from 60 to 30 days might sound like a downgrade, it aligns perfectly with the typical travel habits of Indian tourists. According to official data, the average stay for an Indian tourist in Thailand is just over seven days. A 30-day window provides more than enough time for most holiday plans, from exploring Bangkok’s vibrant street life to relaxing on the beaches of Phuket or Krabi. The Thai government has explicitly stated that this decision was made to match the actual travel behaviour of its third-largest tourist market. This ensures that the process remains convenient and encourages continued travel from India.
Who Else Is Affected by the Overhaul?
This isn't just about India. The Thai government has streamlined its visa policies for dozens of countries. The new rules create a standardized 30-day visa-free stay for a list of 59 countries, which now includes all 27 European Union member states. India was one of six countries to receive these upgraded privileges, moving from a potential visa-on-arrival status to the more convenient visa-free category. The changes are designed to make the system more uniform under a “one country, one entitlement” principle, closing loopholes and enhancing security while keeping the doors open for tourism.
What You Need for a Smooth Trip
While you don't need a visa for a stay of up to 30 days, you still need to be prepared for your arrival. Immigration authorities will expect you to have the standard documents ready. This includes a passport with at least six months of validity from your date of entry, proof of a confirmed return flight, and details of your accommodation. It is also advisable to carry proof of sufficient funds for your stay. The new visa rules are expected to come into effect 15 days after being published in the Royal Gazette, the date of which has not yet been announced. Until then, the existing rules apply, but it's always best to be prepared for the new 30-day policy on your upcoming trip.
