The Quest for a Hidden Ocean
Europa is one of the most compelling places in our solar system to search for life beyond Earth. Scientists have strong evidence that a global ocean, potentially containing twice as much water as all of Earth's oceans combined, is concealed beneath an ice shell
estimated to be 15 to 25 kilometers thick. While the Europa Clipper mission is not designed to find life itself, its main goal is to determine if this hidden ocean has the right conditions to support it. To do that, it needs to peer through miles of solid ice, a task that requires a very special set of eyes.
Introducing the REASON Instrument
The key to this deep scan is an instrument called the Radar for Europa Assessment and Sounding: Ocean to Near-surface, or REASON. It is the only instrument among the spacecraft's nine scientific tools that can look directly into Europa's icy shell. The technology was developed by researchers who have extensive experience using similar ice-penetrating radar to study Antarctica's massive ice sheets here on Earth. REASON is designed to map the ice shell's thickness, search for its bottom boundary where ice meets ocean, and identify any pockets of water that might be trapped within the shell itself.
How Radar Sees the Unseen
At its core, radar works by sending out radio waves and listening for the echoes that bounce back. By measuring the time it takes for the signal to return, scientists can calculate the distance to an object. The strength and character of the returning echo also reveal properties of the material it bounced off. Ice is mostly transparent to certain radio frequencies, allowing the waves to pass through. Liquid water, however, is highly reflective. Therefore, scientists expect to see a very bright, strong reflection when REASON's signal hits a body of liquid water, whether it's the main ocean or a smaller, perched lake within the ice.
A Tale of Two Frequencies
REASON doesn't just use one type of radio wave; it uses a dual-frequency approach for maximum insight. It transmits both high-frequency (VHF) and very-high-frequency (HF) radio waves. The lower-frequency HF waves (9 MHz) are designed for deep penetration, capable of sounding the full depth of the ice shell, potentially down to 30 kilometers, in search of the main ocean. The higher-frequency VHF waves (60 MHz) provide a sharper, higher-resolution view of the upper few kilometers of the ice shell. This allows scientists to map complex layering, identify buried cracks, and hunt for shallower water pockets that might be crucial for understanding how materials from the surface could mix with the ocean below.
Interpreting the Radargrams
As Europa Clipper performs dozens of close flybys of the moon, REASON will collect data to build up a 3D map of the ice shell's interior. The resulting images, called radargrams, will show a cross-section of the ice. Scientists will look for a distinct, bright, and flat-lying signal that would indicate the smooth interface between the bottom of the ice shell and the top of the liquid ocean. They will also be hunting for other bright spots within the ice that could represent trapped lakes, similar to those found within Antarctica's ice sheet. Understanding the purity and salt content of the ice will be critical for interpreting this data correctly, as salt can affect how deep the radar can see.
