The UK has officially replaced physical visa documents with a digital-only system. As of early 2026, Indian nationals applying for a UK visa will no longer receive a vignette sticker in their passport or a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) card. Instead,
your permission to enter and stay in the UK is held as a secure electronic record called an eVisa. This eVisa is digitally linked to your passport and is part of a broader initiative to modernise the UK's borders. The change affects all visa categories, including tourist, work, and student visas. The core application process remains similar—you will still need to apply online and provide biometric information (fingerprints and a photo) at a Visa Application Centre. However, the outcome is now entirely digital.
Your New Digital Hub: The UKVI Account
The UKVI account is the secure online portal where your eVisa is stored and managed. Think of it as your personal immigration dashboard. This account is now the single most important tool for any Indian travelling to the UK. Through your UKVI account, you can view the details of your visa, including its validity and the conditions of your stay. It is also used to generate 'share codes' which allow you to prove your right to work or rent property in the UK without needing a physical card. Airlines will digitally verify your status before you board your flight, making it crucial that your account details are accurate.
Setting Up Your UKVI Account
For new applicants, once your visa application is approved, you will be prompted to create a UKVI account to access your new eVisa. You will need your passport, your visa application number, and access to a smartphone to complete the process, which often involves using the 'UK Immigration: ID Check' app to verify your identity. If you are an existing visa holder with a BRP, you must also create a UKVI account to transition your status to an eVisa, as BRPs are being completely phased out. The process is free and does not change your existing immigration status. It simply moves the proof of that status online.
What to Expect at the UK Border
With the new system, your passport is your key. When you arrive in the UK, border officials will scan your passport to access your eVisa information directly from their system. You will not need to show a visa sticker or a BRP card. However, it is essential that you travel using the exact same passport that is linked to your UKVI account. If you get a new passport, you must update the details in your UKVI account before you travel. Failure to do so could result in delays or even being denied entry by your airline.

Your UKVI account is now the primary way to keep your information up to date. You must use it to report any changes to your personal details, such as a new passport number, address, or name. The most common pitfall for travellers is a mismatch between the details on their passport and the information stored in their UKVI account. Before any trip, log into your account to double-check that everything is correct. It is also wise to have a screenshot of your eVisa status on your phone as a personal backup, though it is not officially required for travel. Airlines and border officials will rely on the live digital system for checks.
