A Timely Boost of Moisture
The success of the Rabi season, which gives India staples like wheat, mustard, and chickpeas, is heavily dependent on the conditions left behind by the monsoon. Late-season rains in September are critical for two main reasons: they recharge soil moisture
needed for sowing, and they top up reservoirs that provide irrigation through the dry winter months. After a season marked by an overall deficit and uneven distribution, recent rainfall in central, western, and parts of northern India has provided a much-needed boost. This last spell of rain is crucial for preparing fields, ensuring seeds germinate properly, and giving young plants a healthy start, especially in rainfed areas.
Improved Reservoir Levels, But a Mixed Picture
One of the most significant benefits of the September showers has been the recovery in reservoir levels. According to data from the Central Water Commission, water storage has improved, particularly in the western and central regions, where levels are now above normal. This is good news for states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh. However, the picture is not uniform. The national storage level remains below the ten-year average and significantly lower than last year. Southern and northern regions, in particular, face a more challenging situation with reservoirs holding substantially less water than normal, which could pose a risk for irrigation-dependent crops in those areas.
A Bright Outlook for Wheat and Mustard
The improved soil moisture is creating a positive outlook for the sowing of major Rabi crops. Wheat, the cornerstone of India's food security, stands to benefit significantly. States like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana, which form the wheat belt, have received favourable pre-sowing moisture, encouraging farmers to potentially increase acreage. Similarly, the conditions are advantageous for oilseeds like mustard, a key crop in Rajasthan and Haryana. Good moisture reduces the initial irrigation burden and sets the stage for potentially higher yields, provided the winter weather remains favourable with cool temperatures and no extreme events.
Lingering Concerns and Regional Disparities
Despite the optimism, the 2026 monsoon has been described as one of the most spatially distorted in years, leaving a patchwork of deficits across the country. States in the southern peninsula and parts of the northeast are grappling with significant rainfall shortages. The monsoon deficit in states like Kerala, Karnataka, and Bihar remains a major concern, impacting both the tail end of the Kharif season and the prospects for Rabi crops that rely on stored water. The El Niño phenomenon, which strengthened during the season, is believed to be a key factor behind the erratic rainfall. This unevenness means that while some regions are preparing for a bumper harvest, others are bracing for potential water stress.
