His Last Appearance in India Colours
Hardik Pandya has not played competitive cricket for the national team since the conclusion of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in May 2026. His last major tournament for India was the T20 World Cup in early 2026. An injury sustained during the subsequent
IPL season has kept him on the sidelines, forcing him to miss several series, including the recent T20I contest against Afghanistan and the upcoming ODI series against the West Indies. This extended absence has been a major point of discussion, especially with a World Cup on the horizon.
A Complicated Injury Saga
The primary reason for Pandya’s hiatus is a string of fitness issues. He suffered a quadriceps injury during the IPL 2026 season. Just as a comeback seemed near, he experienced a further leg issue during a fitness test at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE), which ruled him out of a planned return during the Afghanistan series. This setback was particularly frustrating as he was reportedly declared fit just before suffering the new issue. His recovery is now being carefully managed at the CoE, with a potential return to competitive cricket slated for around September 20, 2026, though this is subject to final medical clearance.
It's More Than Just the Injury
While the quadriceps strain is the immediate cause, the concerns around Pandya run deeper. Head Coach Gautam Gambhir recently clarified the management's position, stating that Pandya is currently not in a condition to bowl his full quota of 10 overs in an ODI. This is the critical piece of the puzzle. Pandya's immense value to the Indian ODI side hinges on his ability to function as a genuine seam-bowling all-rounder. The selectors and team management are unwilling to rush him back as a specialist batter, especially with the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa in mind, where a pace all-rounder is considered vital. The message is clear: he needs to prove he can handle a full workload before being reintegrated into the senior squad.
The BCCI's Cautious Approach
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is taking a firm, long-term view. Rather than an immediate international return, Pandya has been named in the India A squad for a series against Australia A, scheduled for October. This move is designed to give him crucial match practice in a competitive but controlled environment. His performance and, more importantly, his body's response to the demands of batting and bowling in those matches will be closely monitored. This cautious path underscores a shift in how the board manages its key assets, prioritizing long-term availability over short-term gains. Despite his injury struggles, Pandya retains a Grade B annual contract for the 2025-26 season, indicating he remains a key part of their future plans, provided he can regain full fitness.
