The Great Dry Spell
The month of August 2026 was unusually dry for India, with rainfall significantly below normal levels. In fact, it was recorded as the hottest August since 1901. This extended “break” in the monsoon led to a cumulative rainfall deficit for the season,
which as of the end of August stood at nearly 14% below the long-period average. The dry spell was particularly pronounced in peninsular India, causing significant stress on summer-sown (Kharif) crops that were in a critical growth phase. The lack of rain not only delayed the planting of crops like cotton and soybean but also threatened the yields of those already sown, raising concerns about agricultural output and the replenishment of vital water reservoirs.
The Science Behind the Lull
So, what turned off the tap? The primary culprit identified by meteorologists is the strengthening of El Niño conditions in the equatorial Pacific Ocean. El Niño is a climate pattern characterized by the unusual warming of surface waters, which can disrupt weather patterns globally. For India, it typically weakens the monsoon winds and suppresses rainfall. This year, the strong El Niño was a dominant factor. Additionally, the monsoon was affected by other atmospheric phenomena. The position of the monsoon trough, an elongated low-pressure area that is a key driver of rainfall, was not favourable. While some low-pressure systems did form over the Bay of Bengal, their interaction with Western Disturbances led to concentrated heavy rain in some pockets of eastern and northern India, rather than a widespread, uniform revival across the country.
Signs of a September Revival
Despite a grim outlook at the end of August, the weather patterns in early September are showing signs of hope. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the formation of a fresh cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal. Such systems are crucial as they typically evolve into low-pressure areas that move inland, pulling moisture-laden winds from the sea and triggering widespread rainfall. Forecasts indicate that this could bring a fresh spell of rain to several states. While the monsoon has remained subdued over peninsular India in the first week of September, this new system could reactivate it. Heavy rainfall is anticipated in states like Uttar Pradesh and Punjab until September 13, with a potential revival in Maharashtra and Rajasthan around September 12-14.
What This Means for India
A September revival is critical, but it comes with a degree of uncertainty. For the agricultural sector, any rainfall is welcome news. It could help salvage standing Kharif crops that are facing moisture stress and improve the soil moisture needed for the upcoming winter (Rabi) planting season. However, the impact will depend entirely on the intensity and distribution of the rainfall. Even with a good September, experts are cautious. The IMD's monthly outlook for September suggested that rainfall for the country as a whole could still end up below normal. This is because the deficit from the extremely dry August is substantial and would be difficult to erase completely. The focus is therefore not just on the quantity of rain, but whether it falls in the regions that need it most, particularly the parched agricultural belts of the south and central plains.
