Day 1: Arrival and Exploration in Kandy
Begin your adventure in Kandy, the cultural capital of Sri Lanka. After arriving, check into a budget-friendly guesthouse or hostel; many are available for backpackers. Spend your afternoon exploring the city's core. A walk around the serene Kandy Lake
is free and offers picturesque views. While the entrance fee for the famous Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic can be steep for a budget traveler (around 1,500 LKR), you can admire the complex from the outside and soak in the atmosphere for free. For a panoramic view of the city without a ticket price, you can find paths leading up the hill behind the temple. As evening approaches, dive into Sri Lanka's culinary scene. Grab a delicious and filling dinner of kottu roti from a local eatery, which should only set you back between 300-700 LKR.
Day 2: The World's Most Scenic Train Ride
Today is all about one of the most iconic travel experiences in Sri Lanka: the train journey from Kandy to Ella. This ride is celebrated for its breathtaking views of rolling tea plantations, misty mountains, and lush green valleys. Be sure to book your tickets in advance if possible, as seats fill up quickly. A second-class or third-class ticket is the most economical option, with prices around 600 LKR and 300 LKR respectively, and offers an authentic local experience. The journey itself takes approximately six to seven hours, so grab a window seat, buy some snacks from vendors who hop on at various stops, and enjoy the cinematic scenery unfolding outside. Upon arriving in Ella in the late afternoon, check into your hostel and take a leisurely stroll through the small, vibrant town that has become a backpacker hub.
Day 3: Hiking and Views in Ella
Ella is a hiker's paradise, with many of its main attractions accessible for free. Start your morning with a hike up Little Adam's Peak. It's a relatively easy trek that takes about two hours round trip and rewards you with stunning panoramic views of the Ella Gap. Afterwards, make your way to the famous Nine Arch Bridge, an architectural marvel nestled amidst the greenery. You can walk along the railway tracks to reach it and wait for a train to pass for a classic photo opportunity. In the afternoon, you can cool off at Ravana Falls, a popular waterfall located just a short bus or tuk-tuk ride from town. For dinner, Ella offers a plethora of budget-friendly cafes and restaurants catering to travelers, where you can enjoy another hearty Sri Lankan meal.
Day 4: Journey to the Southern Coast
It's time to trade the hills for the coast. The most budget-friendly way to get from Ella to Mirissa is by bus. You'll likely need to take a bus from Ella to Matara first (look for the number 31 bus), a journey of about five hours. From Matara's main bus station, it's a short 20-minute bus ride to Mirissa. The total cost for this bus journey is exceptionally low, making it perfect for backpackers. Once in Mirissa, find your hostel or guesthouse, many of which are located just a short walk from the beach. Spend the rest of the day relaxing on the golden sands, taking a dip in the Indian Ocean, and watching the sunset from the famous Coconut Tree Hill, a must-visit spot for its incredible views.
Day 5: Surfing in Mirissa and Departure
Wake up to the sound of waves and dedicate your final day to Mirissa's main draw: surfing. The town's bay offers gentle waves, making it an ideal spot for beginners. You can rent a surfboard for a full day for around $10-$15 or opt for a beginner's lesson, which typically costs between $15 and $25 for a couple of hours and includes the board and instructor. Spend your morning catching waves and enjoying the laid-back beach vibe. In the afternoon, enjoy one last Sri Lankan rice and curry before concluding your five-day journey. From Mirissa, you have several options for onward travel, including buses that can take you to other coastal towns or back to Colombo.
