A Boost for International Travel
In a move designed to simplify travel and boost tourism, India's Ministry of Home Affairs has authorised 11 additional international ports for foreign nationals arriving on an e-visa. This expansion increases the total number of designated entry points
to 88, a significant jump that enhances the programme's utility. The network now comprises 37 airports, 38 seaports, and 13 land ports, offering unprecedented access across the country. This decision is part of a broader strategy to liberalise and streamline India's visa regime, which has seen the e-visa facility grow from serving 43 countries in 2014 to 172 today. The system's efficiency is a key part of its appeal, with officials noting that approximately 95% of e-visa applications are processed within 72 hours.
The 11 New E-Visa Gateways
The latest expansion is notable for its inclusion of two new airports and, significantly, nine land border crossings. This opens up new routes for travellers arriving from neighbouring countries. The newly added ports are: Airports: Bhopal Airport and Tirupati Airport. Land Ports: Agartala, Darranga, Gede, Ghojadanga, Haridaspur, Jaigaon, Dawki, Moreh, and Attari (Road). The inclusion of airports like Bhopal provides easier access to Central India, while Tirupati serves as another gateway for pilgrims and tourists visiting Andhra Pradesh. The addition of nine land ports greatly improves flexibility for overland travellers.
What This Means for Your Travel Plans
For e-visa holders, this change means more choice and potentially simpler itineraries. Previously, travellers might have needed to book connecting flights or arrange complex overland travel to reach certain regions. Now, they can fly directly into cities like Bhopal or Tirupati. For example, someone interested in exploring the cultural heritage of Madhya Pradesh can now land directly in its capital, saving time and money. The new land ports primarily facilitate entry from Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Myanmar, offering more options for regional travel. It is crucial for travellers to remember that an e-visa is only valid for entry at these designated 88 ports. You cannot arrive at any random airport or border crossing. However, departure is permitted from any of the authorised Immigration Check Posts in India.
A Quick Refresher on India's E-Visa
The Indian e-visa is an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) that allows citizens of eligible countries to apply online for a visa without visiting an Indian embassy or consulate. The system covers a wide array of travel purposes, with 17 sub-categories including tourism, business, medical treatment, and attending conferences. The application process is handled entirely online, where you upload your photo and a copy of your passport. Once approved, the ETA is sent to your email. You must print this authorisation and present it to immigration officers upon arrival at one of the designated e-visa ports, where the visa will be stamped into your passport. According to government figures, these electronic visas now account for approximately 78% of all visas issued by India, highlighting its success and popularity among international visitors.
