'visa-free' doesn't mean you can just show up with your passport. Before you fly, you must fill out the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online, typically within three days of your arrival. At immigration, be prepared to show your valid passport with at least six months of validity, a confirmed return or onward flight ticket, and proof of accommodation. While not always asked for, having proof of sufficient funds for your stay is also recommended to ensure a smooth entry.
Thailand: Navigating the Visa Exemption
Thailand's entry policies for Indians have seen some changes, so it's crucial to have the latest information. As of mid-2026, Thailand has restored a visa-exemption scheme for Indian passport holders. This followed a brief period of confusion where a shift to a paid Visa on Arrival was considered and then dropped. Under the current rules, Indians can enter Thailand for tourism for up to 30 days without needing a visa or paying an entry fee. Previously, a 60-day visa-free stay was in effect, and while a change to 30 days has been approved, travellers should always check the latest official announcements from the Thai Immigration Bureau before booking. Like other countries, you will still need a passport with at least six months' validity, proof of a return flight, and evidence of accommodation.
Sri Lanka: Free, but an ETA is a Must
The teardrop isle is another favourite for Indian travellers, and the entry process has become more streamlined. Effective May 2026, Sri Lanka offers a free tourist Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for citizens of several countries, including India. This allows for a 30-day stay with a double-entry facility. It is critical to understand that while the ETA is free, it is not automatic and is not a visa on arrival. You must apply for and receive approval for your ETA online through the official government portal before you depart for Sri Lanka. Arriving without an approved ETA could lead to complications. When you travel, carry a copy of your ETA approval, along with your passport (valid for at least six months), return ticket, and proof of funds.
Kenya: The New eTA System
For those looking for a wildlife adventure, Kenya has made its entry process entirely digital. As of January 2024, Kenya no longer issues traditional visas or visas on arrival for tourists from any country, including India. Instead, all visitors must apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) online before their journey. The tourist eTA is typically a single-entry authorization valid for a stay of up to 90 days. The application requires you to submit documents such as your passport details, flight itinerary, and accommodation bookings. The process is designed to be straightforward, but it's essential to apply at least a few days before your travel to allow for processing time. Without an approved eTA, you will not be permitted to enter the country.
