What is the Package Visa?
Imagine booking your entire holiday—flights, accommodation, and visa—in one seamless digital transaction. That's the promise of Saudi Arabia's new Package Visa. This initiative allows travellers from eligible countries to purchase a complete travel package
from an approved provider, with the tourist visa application integrated directly into the process. Instead of applying separately to an embassy or consulate, the visa is issued electronically within 48 hours of purchasing the package. The goal is to eliminate the complicated paperwork and multiple steps traditionally associated with international travel, making the journey from planning to arrival significantly smoother.
How the Integrated Process Works
The new system is designed for simplicity. Travellers will use digital platforms from accredited travel companies, such as Reserval and Almosafer, to select a pre-approved package. These packages must include, at a minimum, a return flight and accommodation in a licensed hotel. During the booking, the system gathers the necessary information for the visa, and upon payment, the application is processed automatically. The single-entry tourist visa is then emailed to the traveller, valid for a three-month period and allowing a stay of up to 88 days. This replaces the old method of securing a visa first and then making separate, often non-refundable, travel arrangements.
A Key Part of Vision 2030
The Package Visa is much more than a convenience for tourists; it's a strategic move under Saudi Arabia's ambitious Vision 2030 plan. The Kingdom is actively working to diversify its economy away from oil, with tourism identified as a key pillar for growth. The goal is to attract 100 million annual visitors by 2030 and increase tourism's contribution to the national GDP. To achieve this, Saudi Arabia is not only developing massive giga-projects like NEOM and the Red Sea Global destinations but also removing barriers to entry. Initiatives like the tourist e-Visa, visa-on-arrival, and now the Package Visa are all designed to make the country more accessible and competitive as a global tourism hub.
Big News for Indian Travellers
For Indian travellers, this development is particularly significant. India is one of the first seven countries included in the pilot program for the Package Visa, alongside nations like Egypt, Pakistan, and Indonesia. Given the relatively short flight times, Saudi Arabia is positioning itself as an attractive new destination for short-haul trips, weekend getaways, and cultural exploration. The streamlined visa process makes spontaneous travel far more feasible. While the Package Visa itself does not include specific arrangements for Umrah, visa holders are permitted to travel to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, adding another layer of appeal for many visitors.
What to Know During the Test Phase
As the name suggests, the 'Package Visa' is currently in a pilot phase. This means it is only available through a limited number of accredited travel providers and for citizens of specific countries. As the system is tested and refined, the list of eligible nationalities and approved travel agencies is expected to expand. For now, interested travellers should look for packages offered by official partners like Reserval and Almosafer. The initiative represents a clear signal of Saudi Arabia's intent to become a major, easily accessible player in the global tourism market, fundamentally changing how visitors plan their trips to the Kingdom.
