For instance, while job postings for skills like Python and JavaScript have fallen, the salaries for high-level roles requiring these skills have actually increased, indicating a consolidation of roles where one AI-assisted employee can accomplish what previously took a team. This shift means the era of 'easy' entry-level IT jobs focused on simple, repeatable tasks is coming to an end.
On the Frontline: QA and Entry-Level Coding
Certain roles are at the epicentre of this AI-driven change. Manual software testing, or Quality Assurance (QA), is one of the most affected domains. AI tools can now generate test cases, automate regression testing, and even predict defect hotspots far more efficiently than human testers. This doesn't mean QA is disappearing, but the role is shifting from manual execution to strategic oversight. Professionals who simply run test cases are at high risk, while those who can design quality architecture, strategise testing, and manage AI-powered automation tools are becoming more valuable. Similarly, entry-level programming jobs are being reshaped. Generative AI can write, debug, and optimise basic code snippets, reducing the need for large teams of junior developers to handle routine coding tasks. This has led to a notable decline in demand for mid-level roles (3-5 years experience) and a fall in median salaries for freshers, even as the number of fresher postings has grown.
From Support Agents to Data Entry: The Broader Impact
The transformation extends beyond core development. Customer support roles, a cornerstone of India's BPO industry, are being heavily impacted as AI-powered chatbots handle an increasing volume of routine inquiries. This has led to layoffs and a restructuring of support teams, where human agents focus on complex escalations. Likewise, data entry and processing roles face a high probability of automation. Intelligent software can now scan documents, extract information, and update databases with minimal human intervention, a shift already underway in banking and e-commerce. For these professionals, the path forward involves pivoting to roles that require human judgment, such as data analytics, process oversight, or quality assurance for the automated systems themselves.
The Rise of New and Evolving Roles
While some roles shrink, AI is creating new opportunities and augmenting others. For every job lost to AI, several new ones are being created, though they require different skills. A Nomura report found that India recorded significantly more AI-related hires than layoffs between 2022 and August 2026. Demand is surging for specialised roles like AI/ML engineers, data architects, and AI platform builders. Beyond these technical positions, a new category of 'AI-augmented' jobs is emerging. These are roles like 'Prompt Engineer' or 'AI Ethicist', which didn't exist a few years ago. More broadly, existing roles are being enhanced. A financial analyst can use AI for deeper market insights, and a project manager can use it for better resource planning. The most resilient professionals will be those who learn to collaborate with AI, using it as a tool to enhance their own expertise.
The Upskilling Imperative
This transformation makes one thing clear: continuous learning is no longer optional. To stay relevant, IT professionals must actively upskill. The demand is shifting from pure execution to strategic skills like complex problem-solving, system architecture, and AI tool integration. Companies across India are investing heavily in training their workforce, with some reports indicating nearly half of all tech professionals are now receiving some form of AI training. This isn't just for junior employees; a significant portion of senior professionals are also enrolling in AI and machine learning courses to guide their teams through the transition. For individuals, the message is to move from being a user of technology to an architect of solutions that leverage AI. The future belongs not to those who can simply code, but to those who can think critically and strategically alongside their new AI counterparts.
