Putting Networks to the Test
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) recently conducted an extensive Independent Drive Test (IDT) to measure the real-world performance of mobile networks in Haridwar and Rishikesh. The assessment, carried out between late June and early July
2026, covered Airtel, BSNL, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea (Vi). The tests were comprehensive, spanning over 292 kilometers of city roads and key routes, seven hotspot locations like railway stations and airports, and even 1.4-kilometer walk tests in crowded areas like Har Ki Pauri and Triveni Ghat. This audit wasn't just about checking signal bars; it was a deep dive into crucial Quality of Service (QoS) parameters, including call reliability, data speeds, and overall coverage quality.
The Verdict on Voice Calls: A Mixed Bag
When it comes to the most fundamental function of a phone—making a call—the results show a significant performance gap between operators. Vodafone Idea (Vi) emerged as the most reliable for voice calls, achieving a perfect record with zero dropped calls out of 451 attempts during the test. In contrast, BSNL struggled the most, registering 13 dropped calls from 426 successful connections. Airtel and Reliance Jio fell in the middle, with Airtel dropping 10 calls and Jio dropping just 2. Beyond dropped calls, TRAI also measured call silence, where a conversation goes quiet for more than three seconds. Here, Airtel performed best with the fewest instances of silence, while BSNL again had the most issues. This data paints a clear picture: for visitors prioritizing uninterrupted conversations, Vi's network demonstrated superior stability on this route.
Data Speeds: A Clear Leader Emerges
For travelers looking to stream, browse, or upload photos, the data speed audit revealed a different winner. Reliance Jio delivered the fastest average 5G download speed, clocking in at a blazing 205.57 Mbps. This was significantly ahead of Airtel at 128.99 Mbps and Vi at 58.46 Mbps. BSNL, which was tested on its 4G network, managed only 7.96 Mbps. However, when it came to upload speeds—crucial for posting videos or sending large files—Airtel took the lead with an average speed of 24.54 Mbps, narrowly beating Jio's 23.21 Mbps. These results highlight a trade-off for consumers: Jio offers a superior experience for consuming content, while Airtel provides a slight edge for creating and sharing it.
Coverage Gaps and Signal Quality
A fast network is useless without a signal. The audit also assessed coverage by counting 'poor signal samples'. Once again, Vi showcased its strength in network consistency, recording the fewest coverage gaps among all operators. BSNL, on the other hand, had the highest number of poor signal samples, indicating more frequent dead zones along the tested routes. Airtel and Jio placed between these two extremes. The challenging terrain and high tourist density of the Haridwar-Rishikesh corridor pose significant challenges for all telecom providers. These audits are designed not just to rank operators but to identify specific areas where infrastructure needs improvement to provide the seamless connectivity that users expect, especially in such a high-traffic region.
