The Coffee Trail: Bengaluru to Chikmagalur
Often called the 'Coffee Land of Karnataka', Chikmagalur is a classic choice for a reason. The roughly 245-kilometre drive takes about five to six hours and is an experience in itself. The best time to go is from October to February, when the post-monsoon
greenery is at its peak and the weather is cool and pleasant. The most popular route is via NH75 through Hassan and Belur. The roads are generally in good condition, making for a smooth journey. For a dose of history, take a detour to the magnificent Hoysala temples at Belur and Halebidu, which showcase stunning architecture. Once in Chikmagalur, the main attractions are the majestic peaks. A drive up to Mullayanagiri, Karnataka's highest peak, offers panoramic views, though the final stretch of road is narrow and requires cautious driving. Another must-visit is Baba Budangiri, a mountain range revered as the birthplace of coffee in India. Exploring the sprawling coffee estates is essential; many offer guided walks and fresh brew tastings.
The Scotland of India: Bengaluru to Coorg
Known for its misty hills, dense forests, and sprawling coffee plantations, Coorg (Kodagu) is a fantastic early winter escape. The most common route from Bengaluru is the 270 km drive via the Mysore-Madikeri highway (NH275), which takes about five to six hours. This route is well-maintained and packed with interesting stops. History buffs can explore Srirangapatna, Tipu Sultan's former capital, and the grand Mysore Palace. A significant stop is Bylakuppe, home to the Namdroling Monastery, often called the Golden Temple, which is the second-largest Tibetan settlement in India. As you get closer to Coorg, a visit to the Dubare Elephant Camp on the banks of the river Kaveri offers a chance to see elephants up close. Once in Coorg, the main town of Madikeri is a great base. Don't miss Raja's Seat for stunning sunset views over the valleys, the historic Madikeri Fort, and the beautiful Abbey Falls, which is especially vibrant after the monsoon.
The Green Paradise: Bengaluru to Wayanad
Crossing into 'God's Own Country', the road trip to Wayanad in Kerala offers a journey through incredible biodiversity. The drive is approximately 280 km and takes six to seven hours. The most popular route is via Mysore, Gundlupet, and Sultan Bathery. A major highlight of this drive is passing through the Bandipur National Park and Tiger Reserve, where you might spot elephants, deer, and other wildlife.
