A New Chapter in Overnight Travel
The Vande Bharat chair cars have already changed the perception of daytime train travel in India, and now the sleeper version is poised to do the same for overnight journeys. The second Vande Bharat Sleeper, named the Sant Ravidas Express, is scheduled
to be flagged off on July 17, 2026. It will connect Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh with Chheharta in Amritsar, Punjab, creating a vital link between two major spiritual and economic hubs. Unlike the previous generation of trains, the Vande Bharat Sleeper is a ground-up reimagining of what an overnight train can be, blending speed with passenger-focused design. The goal is to provide a premium, comfortable, and reliable alternative to both existing train services and short-haul flights for journeys between 800 and 1,200 kilometres.
Inside the Modern Sleeper Coach
The significant upgrade lies within the coaches themselves. Designed for long-distance comfort, each 16-coach trainset can accommodate 823 passengers across three AC classes. The interiors feature ergonomically designed berths that are broader and better cushioned for a more restful sleep. Passenger amenities see a major overhaul with individual reading lights, ample mobile and laptop charging points, and Wi-Fi-enabled infotainment systems. Hygiene has been prioritized with modern bio-vacuum toilets and sensor-based water taps. Safety is also a core focus, with the indigenous Kavach anti-collision system, CCTV surveillance, automatic fire detection systems, and automatic doors. An advanced suspension system minimizes jerks and vibrations, ensuring a smoother ride even at high speeds.
The Crucial Role of Speed and Connectivity
A modern train is only as good as the tracks it runs on. The Vande Bharat Sleeper is designed for a maximum operational speed of 160 km/h, a significant leap over most conventional mail and express trains. This speed, combined with faster acceleration and deceleration, drastically cuts down travel time. The new Sant Ravidas Express, for example, will cover the journey between Varanasi and Chheharta in about 22 hours, creating a direct and efficient overnight option. The selection of routes for these new trains is strategic, targeting high-demand corridors where faster connectivity can unlock significant economic and social benefits. By linking major cities, industrial towns, and pilgrimage centres like Varanasi, Lucknow, Ludhiana, and Amritsar, the train serves not just devotees but also business travellers, students, and families.
More Than a Train: A Strategic Shift
The launch of the Vande Bharat Sleeper trains represents a broader strategic shift for Indian Railways. It’s an ambitious move to modernize the fleet and offer a competitive, state-built alternative in the premium travel segment. These trains are designed, developed, and manufactured in India, showcasing the nation's growing engineering capabilities under the 'Make in India' initiative. The positive passenger feedback from the first sleeper service on the Guwahati-Howrah route has been encouraging, with high occupancy rates prompting plans for even larger 24-coach versions to meet demand. This expansion signals a clear focus on enhancing capacity and improving the passenger experience on the country's most vital long-distance routes.
