The Landmark SAMBAR Study
A major new study has added a crucial layer of nuance to this story for South Asians. An international team of researchers conducted the South Asian MicroBiome ARray (SAMBAR) project, one of the most culturally and geographically diverse surveys of its kind. They analysed the gut microbiomes of 575 adults from ten different communities across India and Sri Lanka. What made this study powerful was its design: for each community, they sampled people living in their ancestral villages and compared them to relatives who had moved to urban centres. This allowed them to isolate the effects of an urban lifestyle while controlling for genetic background.
Not a One-Size-Fits-All Story
The study confirmed the general urban effect: city dwellers, on average, showed an increase in bacteria linked to metabolic diseases, like Megamonas, which is associated with higher blood glucose. However, the headline finding was the sheer variety in how people's bodies responded. The impact of urbanisation was not uniform; it was, as the researchers put it, 'community-driven' and 'heterogeneous'. In other words, while the pressures of urban life are similar, the response of the South Asian gut is deeply personal. Some individuals' microbiomes changed dramatically, while others proved more resilient, maintaining microbial signatures that reflected their ancestral diets and heritage.
Why Do Our Guts Respond Differently?
The research suggests that local culture, geography, and retained dietary habits play a huge role. An individual who moves to a city but continues to eat traditional, fibre-rich meals may retain a healthier gut profile than someone who fully adopts a diet of heavily processed foods. The study found that geography and community membership were actually stronger predictors of a person's microbiome composition than whether they lived in a rural or urban setting. For example, bacteria associated with wheat and yoghurt consumption were found in some communities, reflecting their specific dietary staples and how their microbiomes have adapted. This shows that our gut is not just a passive recipient of our environment; it's an active system shaped by our long-term cultural and dietary history.
