Book Smart, Beat the Rush
October is peak festival season in India, meaning trains get booked out weeks, if not months, in advance. Indian Railways opens bookings 120 days ahead, so planning is crucial. For popular routes, tickets can vanish within minutes of the booking window
opening, which is typically at 8:00 AM. To increase your chances, create an account on the IRCTC website or app beforehand and use the 'Master List' feature to save passenger details. This saves critical time during the booking frenzy. If you're making last-minute plans, the Tatkal quota is your best bet, opening one day before the journey. AC classes (1AC, 2AC, 3AC) offer more comfort with air-conditioning and included bedding, making them a wise choice for overnight travel.
Pack for Comfort and Convenience
Smart packing can transform your journey. Opt for layered, breathable cotton clothing that is comfortable to sleep in. While AC coaches provide a light blanket, they can get surprisingly cold, so packing your own shawl, stole, or a light blanket is a good idea. A travel pillow, either inflatable or memory foam, will save you from a stiff neck. For security, a lock and chain to secure your luggage to the berth is a must-have for peace of mind. Don't forget a power bank to keep your devices charged, as power outlets are not always available or functional. A multi-port charger can also be a lifesaver.
Stay Hygienic and Healthy
Maintaining hygiene on a long journey is essential for your comfort and health. Pack a dedicated toiletry kit with hand sanitiser, wet wipes, toilet paper, soap strips, a toothbrush, and toothpaste. Keeping these in a small, easily accessible pouch means you won't have to rummage through your main luggage for a late-night bathroom trip. It's also wise to carry a small first-aid kit with essentials like pain relievers, motion sickness tablets, and any personal medications. Wearing easy-to-slip-on footwear like flip-flops or slippers makes moving around the coach and visiting the restroom much more convenient.
Navigate Your Onboard Dining
When it comes to food, you have several options. Most long-distance trains have a pantry car, but the quality can be inconsistent. Indian Railways and IRCTC have made efforts to improve food safety, including upgrading kitchens and conducting audits, but it's always good to be prepared. You can pre-book meals through IRCTC's e-catering service, which allows you to order from a variety of restaurants at upcoming stations. Many experienced travellers prefer to pack their own food for at least the first part of the journey. Non-perishable snacks like dry fruits, nuts, and biscuits are great to have on hand. Also, carry a reusable water bottle that you can refill at stations.
Make the Journey Part of the Adventure
A long train ride is a great opportunity to disconnect and relax. Download movies, podcasts, or music on your phone or tablet before you leave. A good book is another classic companion for a train journey. The side berths often offer more privacy and a dedicated window to watch the world go by. While it's important to be cautious with your belongings, don't hesitate to strike up a conversation with fellow passengers; it’s a unique part of the Indian train travel experience and can lead to interesting stories and new friendships. Keep track of your train's real-time location using an app like the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) to know when your destination is approaching.
