A Policy Shift Opens the Cosmos
Until recently, the Indian space sector was almost exclusively the domain of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). However, landmark policy reforms in 2020, crystallized in the Indian Space Policy 2023, have unlocked the cosmos for private enterprise.
The creation of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) as a single-window agency was a pivotal move. Its role is to authorize, promote, and supervise the activities of non-governmental entities, allowing them to use ISRO's world-class facilities and expertise. This shift is designed to let ISRO focus on advanced research and deep space missions, while private players drive commercial services, with the ambitious goal of growing India's share of the global space economy from 2-3% to 8% by 2033.
The Rocket Builders: Reaching for Orbit
At the forefront of this private surge are the launch vehicle startups. Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace made history on July 18, 2026, with the successful launch of its Vikram-1 rocket, making India the third country with a private orbital launch capability. The four-stage rocket, built with a lightweight carbon-composite structure, is designed to place small satellites into low Earth orbit, catering to a booming global market. Meanwhile, Chennai's Agnikul Cosmos is pioneering with its Agnibaan rocket, which features the world's first single-piece 3D-printed semi-cryogenic engine, called Agnilet. This innovation dramatically cuts manufacturing time and complexity. Agnikul successfully tested its suborbital demonstrator in May 2024 from India's first private launchpad, also built by the company.
Eyes in the Sky: Satellites for a New Age
Beyond launch vehicles, private firms are building sophisticated satellites for a variety of applications. Pixxel, a Bengaluru-based startup, is deploying a constellation of hyperspectral imaging satellites. Unlike standard cameras, these satellites capture data across hundreds of light wavelengths, providing incredibly detailed insights for agriculture, energy, and environmental monitoring. The company has successfully launched several satellites and is expanding its constellation to provide near real-time global coverage. Another key player is Dhruva Space, one of India's older private space firms. It offers full-stack satellite solutions, from building satellite platforms to launch deployment and ground station services, having successfully launched its Thybolt missions.
The Supporting Ecosystem: Propulsion, Software, and Services
A robust space industry requires more than just rockets and satellites. A diverse ecosystem of companies is emerging to provide critical components and services. Bellatrix Aerospace, for instance, specializes in in-space propulsion systems, including eco-friendly 'green' thrusters and electric Hall-effect thrusters that help satellites maneuver in orbit. The company has already flight-qualified its technology and is scaling up production to meet global demand. Other companies like Digantara are focused on space situational awareness by tracking orbital debris, while SatSure provides AI-powered analytics based on satellite data for sectors like finance and agriculture. This growing network of suppliers and service providers is crucial for building a self-sustaining commercial space sector.
