A New Era for Overnight Travel
The familiar rhythm of overnight train travel in India is getting a high-speed upgrade. Indian Railways is rolling out the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express, a modern fleet designed to make long-distance journeys quicker and more comfortable. Building on the success
of the chair-car Vande Bharat trains, this new sleeper version targets overnight routes, aiming to compete with both existing premium trains and air travel. The first services were launched in early 2026, with a Howrah-Guwahati train connecting eastern and northeastern India. A second service between Varanasi and Chheharta (Amritsar) followed in July 2026, enhancing connectivity between Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. These launches mark the beginning of a significant overhaul of India's long-distance rail network, promising a new standard for passengers.
Engineered for Speed and Efficiency
At the heart of the time-saving promise is the train's design. The Vande Bharat sleeper is a self-propelling trainset capable of reaching speeds up to 160 km/h, a significant leap from the average 50-70 km/h of many conventional trains. This enhanced speed is projected to reduce journey times by several hours on key routes. For instance, the planned service between Bengaluru and Pune is expected to cut the travel time from around 19 hours to just 13 hours. This is achieved through distributed power systems that allow for quicker acceleration and deceleration. The advanced engineering also provides a smoother, more stable ride, reducing jerks and noise, which is crucial for passenger comfort during an overnight journey. While the trains are tested for speeds up to 180 km/h, operational speeds will depend on track conditions.
A Look Inside the 'Hotel on Rails'
The passenger experience is a central focus of the new sleeper trains, which have been lauded by some as a "five-star hotel on rails". The fully air-conditioned coaches feature a modern aesthetic with improved lighting and ergonomically designed berths. Each train consists of AC First, AC 2-tier, and AC 3-tier coaches, accommodating around 823 passengers in a 16-coach formation. Special attention has been paid to amenities, including spacious, modern washrooms, ample luggage space, and modular pantries. The interiors are designed for comfort, with features like additional hand-holders and modified snack tables in 3-tier coaches. This focus on a premium onboard experience aims to make the journey itself a comfortable and pleasant part of the holiday, rather than just a means of transport.
Connecting India's Major Hubs
Indian Railways is strategically deploying these trains on some of the country's busiest and longest corridors. Following the initial launches on the Guwahati-Kolkata and Varanasi-Amritsar routes, several other major city pairs are in the pipeline. A highly anticipated service connecting Mumbai and Bengaluru has been approved, which could drastically reduce travel time on the 1,139-km journey. Other major trunk routes like Delhi-Mumbai are also being considered. The plan is to progressively introduce these trains across the country, with dozens of rakes planned for manufacture. However, some production schedules have faced delays, which could affect the pace of the rollout. For now, the focus remains on connecting major commercial, tourist, and pilgrimage centres to meet high demand.

For holidaymakers and families, the new Vande Bharat sleepers present a compelling proposition. Reduced travel times mean passengers can spend less time in transit and more time at their destination. A journey that previously consumed the better part of a day and night can now be completed more efficiently overnight, allowing for a morning arrival. This makes weekend trips and short holidays more feasible on longer routes. The service is positioned as a premium offering, with fares higher than conventional trains but offering a level of comfort and speed that many travellers may find worth the cost.
