From the Station to the Hills
Once you arrive at Kozhikode, your ascent into the misty embrace of Wayanad begins. The district is approximately 85-95 kilometres from the railway station, a journey that takes about three hours by road. You have two primary options: hire a private taxi directly from the station for convenience, or head to the KSRTC bus stand for a more budget-friendly ride. The real magic starts with the Thamarassery Churam, a famous ghat road with nine hairpin bends that climbs up into the mountains. With each turn, the air gets cooler, the fog gets thicker, and the views become more dramatic. Head to the Banasura Sagar Dam, the largest earthen dam in India and the second largest in Asia. During the monsoon, the reservoir fills up, and the sight of the vast expanse of water against the backdrop of the Banasura Hills is truly awe-inspiring. You can walk along the top of the dam or opt for speed boating on the reservoir. The islands that form in the reservoir when the water level is high create a unique and picturesque landscape.
