A New Chapter for South Indian Train Travel
Southern Railway has officially announced the addition of a state-of-the-art Vistadome coach to the Madurai-Guruvayur Express (16327/16328). This special coach begins its service from Madurai on October 22, 2026, marking a significant moment for tourism
and travel in the region. The service from Guruvayur will commence on October 23. This initiative is being introduced on a trial basis, initially scheduled to run until mid-January 2027, to gauge passenger response. Based on the high demand, with initial tickets selling out quickly, the response appears overwhelmingly positive. The service connects two of South India's major pilgrimage centres, Madurai and Guruvayur, making the journey as divine as the destinations themselves.
What Makes a Vistadome Coach Special?
First introduced in India in 2017, Vistadome coaches are designed for an immersive travel experience. The main attractions are the panoramic, extra-large windows and a see-through glass roof, which provide an uninterrupted view of the surrounding landscape. The coach on the Madurai-Guruvayur route features 44 seats. These seats are not just comfortable; they can rotate 180 degrees, allowing you to face the direction of the best views, regardless of the train's movement. For an even better view, an observation lounge at one end of the coach offers a unique perspective of the tracks winding away behind the train. Modern amenities such as Wi-Fi connectivity, an infotainment system, automatic sliding doors, and a mini-pantry area complete the premium experience.
The Scenic Journey Through the Ghats
The true highlight of this Vistadome experience is the route itself. The train travels through the incredibly picturesque Sengottai-Punalur ghat section of the Western Ghats. This stretch is renowned for its lush greenery, rolling hills, and stunning natural beauty. Passengers will be treated to magnificent views of the Aryankavu pass, a particularly scenic part of the journey connecting Tamil Nadu and Kerala. As the train navigates the winding tracks, through tunnels and over bridges, the Vistadome coach provides a front-row seat to the natural splendour that often goes unnoticed on regular train journeys. It offers a new way to appreciate the region's rich biodiversity and dramatic landscapes from the comfort of your seat.
