Understanding the Free Visa Initiative
Abu Dhabi's Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT Abu Dhabi) has launched a programme to boost tourism by covering the visa costs for certain travellers. This is not a blanket visa waiver but a targeted promotion designed to encourage longer stays in the emirate.
The initiative, which runs from August 1 to October 31, 2026, aims to make Abu Dhabi a more competitive holiday destination. The pilot programme will initially support up to 20,000 visas. The core idea is to shift the perception of Abu Dhabi from a brief transit stop to a destination in its own right.
The Three-Night Stay Is Non-Negotiable
The most critical part of this deal is the hotel booking requirement. To qualify for the free visa, travellers must book a stay of at least three consecutive nights in a hotel located within Abu Dhabi. This rule is in place to ensure that visitors spend sufficient time and money locally, boosting the city's hospitality and retail sectors. Simply booking a flight without the required hotel stay will not make you eligible for the offer. The programme directly links the visa subsidy to generating overnight visitation within the emirate.
Eligibility: Who Can Actually Apply?
This specific free visa programme is aimed at Indian passport holders who are travelling directly from India. In addition to the three-night hotel stay, applicants must also have a confirmed return flight ticket to India. It's important to note that you cannot apply for this visa independently through a government portal. The offer is only accessible when you book a complete holiday package through a participating travel agency or an approved online travel partner. These partners handle the visa processing on your behalf.
How to Book and Secure Your Free Visa
The process is streamlined through travel providers. First, find a participating travel agent or online travel agency (OTA). Next, you must select and book a holiday package that explicitly includes a minimum three-night hotel stay in Abu Dhabi along with your return flights from India. Once the booking is complete, the travel partner will initiate the visa application through channels approved by DCT Abu Dhabi. You will need to provide standard documents like a scanned copy of your passport (valid for at least six months) and a passport-size photograph. The agency then delivers the e-visa to you electronically.
What the 'Free' Visa Really Means
Under this programme, DCT Abu Dhabi covers the full cost of the UAE entry visa, which is typically around AED 285. Travel partners are either reimbursed for this amount or work with a destination management company (DMC) where the tourism department covers the cost directly. For the traveller, this means the visa fee is waived when booking a qualifying package. The visa itself is a standard UAE entry permit, which allows you to travel to any of the seven emirates, including Dubai, during your stay. The only condition is that your accommodation for at least three nights is in Abu Dhabi.
Distinguishing from Other Visa Offers
It is crucial not to confuse this specific promotion with other UAE visa options. The UAE offers separate paid transit visas for layovers (typically 48 or 96 hours) for travellers on airlines like Etihad. Many nationalities are also eligible for visa-on-arrival, which does not require pre-application. This three-night stay offer is a distinct, limited-time initiative for Indian tourists booking specific packages and is not a general visa-on-arrival policy. Travellers should always confirm with their travel agent that their package is part of this particular visa waiver programme before finalising payment.
