A Landmark in Indian Travel
For decades, reaching Srinagar meant a challenging, often unpredictable 8-to-11-hour road journey on National Highway 44, susceptible to weather disruptions and traffic. The completion of the monumental Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project
has changed everything. This engineering marvel, featuring the world's highest railway arch bridge over the Chenab River, provides a reliable, all-weather connection to the valley. The Vande Bharat Express now glides through this scenic route, cutting the travel time between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar to under five hours, offering a comfortable and breathtaking alternative.
Your Vande Bharat Train Options
As of August 2026, travellers have multiple Vande Bharat services to choose from. Two trains are already operational, running daily between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar with high occupancy. Adding to this, Indian Railways has recently announced a third Vande Bharat service, catering to immense popular demand. A key highlight of this new train is its scheduled stop at Udhampur (Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan station), improving connectivity for residents and visitors in that region. The existing trains already halt at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Reasi, and Banihal, making the journey convenient for both pilgrims and tourists.
Route, Timings, and Fares
The 269-km journey is a visual treat. The train numbers for the primary existing services are 26401/26402 and 26403/26404. For instance, train 26401 departs Jammu Tawi around 6:20 AM and reaches Srinagar by 11:10 AM. The return service, 26402, typically leaves Srinagar at 2:00 PM, arriving back in Jammu in the evening. The newly approved third train is expected to fill a mid-day slot, with proposed timings showing a 10:30 AM departure from Jammu. Fares are budget-friendly for the experience offered, with AC Chair Car tickets costing approximately ₹700–₹750 and Executive Chair Car seats around ₹1,300–₹1,350. However, fares are dynamic and should always be confirmed at the time of booking.
The Onboard Experience
The Vande Bharat Express ensures your journey to paradise is as heavenly as the destination itself. These specially designed trains are equipped with advanced heating systems to handle the region's climate. Large windows and 180-degree rotatable seats in Executive Class offer panoramic views of the stunning Himalayan landscape. Onboard amenities include Wi-Fi for connectivity, GPS-based passenger information systems, and comfortable seating, ensuring a premium travel experience that far surpasses the old road journey. Crossing the iconic Chenab Bridge, towering 359 metres above the riverbed, is a highlight of the trip.
How to Book Your Tickets
Booking your Vande Bharat journey to Srinagar is straightforward. Tickets can be booked online through the official IRCTC website (irctc.co.in) or its Rail Connect mobile application.
