The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme
The driving force behind this large-scale upgrade is the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, launched by the Ministry of Railways in late 2022. This ambitious project aims to redevelop over 1,300 stations across the country. The goal is not just a cosmetic touch-up
but a complete overhaul, turning stations from mere transit points into integrated 'city centres' that serve the long-term needs of the community. With a phased, station-specific approach, the scheme considers local requirements and passenger numbers to deliver customised upgrades, with hundreds of stations already completed or inaugurated in recent phases.
Connectivity is Non-Negotiable
For a generation that lives online, the digital amenities being rolled out are a game-changer. Free, high-speed Wi-Fi is now available at thousands of stations, allowing students and professionals to stay productive while they wait. Just as crucial are the ubiquitous charging points for laptops and mobile phones. This focus on digital infrastructure means a young commuter's journey is no longer 'dead time'. Instead, it becomes an extension of their classroom, office, or social life, allowing them to work on an assignment, join a quick meeting, or simply stay connected with friends without worrying about a dying battery.
From Grimy Floors to Modern Lounges
The new stations are a world away from the often-criticised state of older facilities. The scheme focuses heavily on enhancing the passenger experience with clean, modern waiting halls, improved seating, and properly maintained toilets. Many larger stations now feature executive lounges and dedicated business areas, offering an airport-like experience with comfortable seating and refreshments. For young people who value comfort and hygiene, these upgrades make train travel a far more attractive and less stressful option. The introduction of permanent holding areas at busy stations also helps decongest platforms, creating a more orderly and pleasant environment for everyone.
A Greater Sense of Safety and Accessibility
Personal safety is a major concern for all travellers, and especially for young women and families. The modernised stations directly address this with well-lit circulating areas, CCTV surveillance, and improved security protocols. Furthermore, in line with the Accessible India Campaign, the redevelopment includes features for differently-abled passengers (Divyangjan), such as ramps, tactile pathways, accessible toilets, and lifts or escalators. This commitment to inclusivity and safety creates a more welcoming and secure atmosphere, which is highly appreciated by a socially conscious younger generation.
Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi: Modernity with a Local Touch
What makes the Amrit Bharat scheme particularly interesting is its vision of 'Virasat Bhi, Vikas Bhi' (heritage alongside development). The redevelopment is not about creating generic, soulless buildings. Instead, station designs often incorporate local art, culture, and architectural heritage. For example, the redeveloped Ayodhya Dham station's design is inspired by temple architecture. This approach gives each station a unique identity and fosters a sense of regional pride among residents. For young Indians who are globally connected yet deeply proud of their local roots, this blend of modern functionality and cultural celebration is a winning combination.
