The most common mistake is asking an AI tool for the final answer. This turns you into a passive recipient of information and hinders real learning. Instead, flip the script. Before asking for a solution, try to solve the problem or answer the question
yourself. Then, use AI to check your work or fill in specific gaps. A more advanced technique is to use AI as a Socratic tutor. Prompt the AI with commands like, “Ask me questions about the causes of the French Revolution until I understand them,” or “Don’t give me the answer, just give me a hint.” This forces you to actively recall information and construct arguments, which is what makes knowledge stick. The struggle of thinking is what creates memory.
Use AI as a Personalised Quiz Generator
One of the most effective ways to study is through retrieval practice, or testing yourself. Manually creating practice questions and flashcards from your notes is tedious. This is where AI excels. You can provide an AI tool with your lecture notes, a chapter summary, or even a long article and ask it to generate practice questions. Be specific. Ask for multiple-choice questions with tricky options, open-ended questions that require critical thinking, or scenario-based problems. You can instruct it to create a mock exam based on the syllabus. The AI does the logistical work of creating the test, but you still have to do the cognitive work of answering the questions. This method keeps you in the driver's seat of your own learning.
Compare Your Summary Against the AI’s
Summarising a complex topic in your own words is a fantastic way to check your comprehension. A great way to integrate AI into this process is to first write your own summary of a topic without any help. Once you’re done, ask the AI to summarise the same material. Now, compare the two. What key points did the AI include that you missed? Did it structure the information more logically? This isn't about the AI being 'right' and you being 'wrong'. It's a gap analysis. The comparison reveals the areas where your understanding is weak. You can then revisit those specific points. This method ensures you are actively engaging with the material first, using AI only as a tool for refinement and to deepen your understanding, not to do the initial thinking for you.
Master Concepts With Creative Analogies
Sometimes a concept just doesn't click. No matter how many times you read the textbook definition, it remains abstract and confusing. AI can be an incredibly patient and creative tutor in these situations. Ask it to explain a difficult concept using an analogy related to something you already understand well, whether it’s cricket, a favourite film, or a recipe. For instance, you could ask, “Explain the concept of blockchain as if you were describing the rules of gully cricket,” or “Explain quantum entanglement using a story about two best friends.” This process, called elaborative interrogation, connects new information to existing knowledge, making it much easier to remember and comprehend. It turns a passive reading exercise into an active, personalised learning experience.
Let AI Be Your Brainstorming Partner, Not Your Ghostwriter
When faced with a big essay or project, the blank page can be intimidating. It's tempting to ask AI to write the first draft. Don't. This outsources the most important part of the learning process. Instead, use AI as a brainstorming partner. If you're writing an essay on climate change solutions, you could ask, “What are ten different angles to approach the topic of renewable energy adoption in India?” or “What are some counterarguments to my position that solar power is the best option?” The AI can provide a variety of ideas and perspectives that you might not have considered. From there, it is your job to research, evaluate, and synthesise these ideas into your own original argument. This preserves your critical thinking while leveraging the AI's ability to generate a wide range of possibilities.
