If you opt for this free service, and your ticket remains on the waitlist after the chart is prepared, Indian Railways will automatically consider you for a confirmed berth in an alternate train travelling on the same route. You can select up to seven alternate trains when you choose this option. It's a fantastic way to increase your chances of getting a confirmed seat without any extra cost. However, it's not a guarantee, as it depends entirely on berth availability in the other trains. Once you are moved to an alternate train, that booking is final.
Consider Your Last-Minute Options
If your waitlisted ticket gets cancelled after the chart is prepared, you'll need a backup plan. The Tatkal and Premium Tatkal quotas open the day before the journey, offering a last-ditch chance to book a confirmed ticket, albeit at a higher price. For those willing to be flexible, luxury and private buses are a comfortable and reliable alternative. Many operators run overnight sleeper services on popular routes, and you can often find a seat even at the last minute. Given that Rakhi 2026 creates a long weekend, road travel will be heavy, so booking a bus or a cab in advance is still wise.
