Plan Ahead, Stay Ahead
Success in a monsoon move lies in meticulous planning. Start by booking reliable packers and movers at least two to three weeks in advance. Reputable companies with experience in rainy season relocations get booked out quickly. When vetting movers, ask
specifically about their monsoon protocols. Do they use closed, waterproof trucks? Do they provide waterproof packing materials like plastic wrap and tarps? Also, check your transit insurance options and read the policy carefully to understand what level of water damage is covered. Finally, monitor the weather forecast closely. Try to schedule the move for the early morning, which often sees lighter rainfall than the afternoon.
Create a Waterproof Fortress
Your packing strategy is the first line of defence. Standard cardboard boxes are highly absorbent and can weaken or collapse when damp, exposing your items. Insist on waterproof packing. This means using plastic bins for sensitive items, wrapping furniture and large appliances in plastic stretch wrap, and reinforcing any cardboard boxes with waterproof tape. For items packed in cardboard, line the boxes with heavy-duty garbage bags before filling them. Create an inventory of everything, and label boxes clearly, adding a prominent “KEEP DRY” note for those containing electronics, documents, or books.
Protect Your Most Vulnerable Items
Certain items are particularly susceptible to moisture and require extra care. Disconnect all electronics at least a day before the move to ensure they are cool and dry. Pack them in their original boxes if possible, adding anti-static bubble wrap and silica gel packets to absorb ambient humidity. Important documents, photos, and artwork should be placed in waterproof zipper pouches or files and transported with you personally, not in the moving truck. Solid wood and engineered wood furniture can warp, so ensure it is thoroughly wrapped in plastic sheeting, paying special attention to corners and joints.
Execution on Moving Day
On the day of the move, the goal is to minimize exposure to rain. Have the crew park the truck as close to your door as possible to shorten the distance. Before loading begins, protect the floors of both your old and new homes by laying down old towels, flattened cardboard, or plastic sheets in high-traffic areas like entryways and hallways. This prevents slips and keeps mud and water from being tracked inside. Have a supply of dry towels handy to wipe down any boxes or furniture that get wet during the short trip from the door to the truck. Designate someone to hold an umbrella over particularly sensitive items as they are being moved.
Unpack Smart to Prevent Mould
The threat isn’t over once your belongings are inside your new home. The 'quiet ruin' often happens post-move, as trapped moisture leads to mould and mildew. Prioritise unpacking any boxes that may have gotten damp. Immediately wipe down all furniture and items with a dry cloth before placing them. Avoid pushing furniture directly against walls for the first few days to allow air to circulate. Run ceiling fans or a dehumidifier to reduce indoor humidity, especially in enclosed spaces. Proper ventilation is key to ensuring your new home stays dry and fresh, preventing long-term damage from unseen moisture.
