The Grandfather of All Paradoxes
The most famous of all time-travel conundrums is the Grandfather Paradox. The logic is simple: if you travel back in time and eliminate your grandfather before he meets your grandmother, you would never have been born. But if you were never born, how
could you have gone back in time to do the deed in the first place? It’s a perfect loop of contradiction. The 'Back to the Future' trilogy makes this its central conflict; Marty McFly must ensure his parents fall in love, otherwise he will literally fade from existence. The film visualises the paradox with a disappearing photograph, making a high-concept idea immediately understandable and creating tangible stakes. Similarly, 'The Terminator' hinges on this concept, with Skynet sending a machine back to kill Sarah Connor before she can give birth to the leader of the human resistance, John Connor. The paradox is the engine of the plot.
The Bootstrap: Who Wrote Beethoven's 5th?
Slightly more complex is the Bootstrap Paradox, also known as an ontological paradox. This occurs when an object, piece of information, or even a person has no discernible origin because they are caught in a time loop. Imagine a fan of Beethoven travels back in time with the sheet music for his 5th Symphony, only to find Beethoven hasn't written it yet. The fan gives it to him, Beethoven publishes it, and it becomes famous. Centuries later, the fan picks up that same music to take it back in time. So, who actually wrote the symphony? The information has no true point of creation. This paradox is expertly used in films like '12 Monkeys' and 'Terminator', where key information that drives the future's events is actually brought from that future into the past. In 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban', Harry is saved by a powerful Patronus charm he believes was cast by his father, only to realise later that he himself must travel back to cast it, inspired by the memory of seeing it cast. He becomes his own inspiration—a classic bootstrap.
Predestination: You Can't Fight Fate
The Predestination Paradox takes a darker, more deterministic view of time. It posits that any attempt to go back and change the past will only end up causing the event you were trying to prevent. Your actions, no matter how freely you think you are choosing them, were always part of the timeline. The film 'Predestination' is the ultimate showcase of this idea, weaving a complex narrative where a character's entire life is a closed loop, responsible for their own existence in a way that is profoundly unsettling. In this model, there is no changing history; there is only fulfilling it. '12 Monkeys' also leans heavily on this, where James Cole's attempts to stop a devastating plague are revealed to be the very actions that ensure the timeline proceeds exactly as it was meant to. His journey back is not to change the past, but for those in the future to study it.
The Get-Out-of-Jail-Free Card: Multiverse Theory
So how do storytellers resolve these impossible knots? Many high-concept films now employ the Multiverse or alternate timeline theory. This suggests that changing the past doesn't alter your own timeline but instead creates a new, branching one. You can kill your grandfather in this new reality, but it won't erase you because you are from the original, unaltered timeline. 'Avengers: Endgame' famously uses this to explain its “time heist,” with The Ancient One explaining that removing an Infinity Stone from the past creates a dangerous new timeline unless the stone is returned to the exact moment it was taken. The film 'Looper' also plays with this, suggesting that changes to the past ripple forward and alter the present in real-time, but the underlying logic implies the creation of new causal pathways rather than a single, mutable timeline. This allows for character agency while sidestepping the most brain-breaking paradoxes.
