A New Policy Opens the Skies
The catalyst for this cosmic boom was the Indian government's decision in 2020 to open the space sector to private enterprise, a move formalized by the Indian Space Policy 2023. This led to the creation of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation
Centre (IN-SPACe), a single-window agency designed to promote, authorize, and regulate the activities of non-governmental entities. By providing access to ISRO's facilities and expertise, IN-SPACe has enabled a rapid expansion of the private ecosystem, which has grown from a handful of companies to over 400 by 2026. This policy shift allows startups to move beyond being mere component suppliers to undertaking complete end-to-end space missions, fostering innovation and attracting significant investment.
Crafting the Launch Vehicles
At the forefront of India's private space race are the rocket builders. Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace made history with the launch of Vikram-S, India's first privately developed suborbital rocket, in November 2022. The company has since achieved an even greater milestone with its Vikram-1 rocket, which successfully completed an orbital launch in July 2026, making India only the third country after the US and China with a private orbital launch capability. Another key player, Agnikul Cosmos, an IIT Madras-incubated startup, has pioneered the use of advanced manufacturing. Their Agnibaan rocket is powered by the world's first single-piece 3D-printed engine, a semi-cryogenic powerhouse named Agnilet. This innovation dramatically reduces manufacturing time and complexity, showcasing a path toward more affordable and rapid access to space.
Building the Eyes in the Sky
Alongside launch vehicles, Indian startups are excelling in satellite manufacturing. Pixxel is a leader in this domain, building a constellation of hyperspectral imaging satellites. Unlike conventional cameras, these satellites capture data across hundreds of light spectrum bands, revealing details invisible to the naked eye. This technology has applications in agriculture for monitoring crop health, in energy for detecting gas leaks, and for environmental tracking. Another prominent company, Dhruva Space, offers a full suite of satellite solutions, including modular satellite platforms (from small CubeSats to larger MicroSats) and ground station services. Founded in 2012, it is one of the more experienced private players, providing 'satellite-as-a-service' solutions for both commercial and defence clients.
The Business of Data from Above
The hardware—rockets and satellites—is only one part of the equation. The true value often lies in the data these systems collect. This is where Earth Observation (EO) and data analytics companies come in. Startups are developing sophisticated platforms that use artificial intelligence to analyze satellite imagery, turning raw data into actionable insights for various industries. Pixxel, for instance, not only builds satellites but also provides an AI-informed analysis platform. This 'downstream' segment of the space economy is crucial, providing services like crop-yield prediction, infrastructure monitoring, disaster management, and tracking climate change indicators like deforestation. As constellations of satellites grow, the ability to process and interpret this vast amount of data will become increasingly critical for businesses and governments.
