From mountainside 'toy trains' to modern glass-roofed coaches slicing through coastal landscapes, the focus is increasingly on the journey itself. Indian Railways is actively curating these experiences, blending heritage, engineering marvels, and breathtaking natural beauty to attract a new wave of travellers who prefer the scenic route.
Kalka-Shimla Railway: A Himalayan Queen
A journey on the Kalka-Shimla Railway is like travelling back in time. This narrow-gauge line, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was built in 1903 and is an engineering marvel. The 'toy train' slowly winds its way up the Himalayan foothills, navigating over 800 bridges, 900 curves, and through 102 tunnels on its 96-kilometre journey to the former summer capital of British India. The ride offers stunning views of pine forests and misty valleys. To enhance this experience, Vistadome coaches with glass ceilings have been introduced, allowing for panoramic views of the spectacular landscape, making it a favourite among tourists.
Nilgiri Mountain Railway: The Blue Mountain Ride
Down south in Tamil Nadu, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway offers another UNESCO-listed experience. This is the only rack railway in India, a testament to the ingenious engineering required to conquer the steep slopes of the Nilgiri Hills. The journey from Mettupalayam to the beloved hill station of Ooty is a charming five-hour ride. Pulled by a vintage steam locomotive on some stretches, the train passes through 16 tunnels and over 250 bridges, with verdant tea plantations and dense forests creating a picturesque backdrop that has captivated travellers for over a century.
Visakhapatnam-Araku Valley: A Journey Through Glass
A prime example of modernising scenic routes is the train journey from the coastal city of Visakhapatnam to the lush Araku Valley in the Eastern Ghats. What makes this route a major tourist draw is the Vistadome coach experience. These special coaches feature large glass windows, a transparent roof, and rotating seats, offering passengers an immersive, 360-degree view of the passing scenery. The train winds through dozens of tunnels and over numerous bridges, revealing stunning valleys, waterfalls, and coffee plantations, turning a simple train ride into a spectacular sightseeing tour.
Konkan Railway: The Coastal Spectacle
Stretching along India's western coastline, the route from Mumbai to Goa on the Konkan Railway is frequently cited as one of the country's most beautiful. It's a journey that showcases the dramatic beauty of the Sahyadri mountains on one side and the Arabian Sea on the other. The trains navigate through deep gorges, over 2,000 bridges, and numerous tunnels. During the monsoon season, the landscape transforms into a vibrant green paradise, with waterfalls cascading down the hillsides, making it an especially popular time to travel this route. Modern trains like the Tejas and Vande Bharat Express now offer a fast and comfortable way to enjoy these timeless views.
Bharat Gaurav Trains: Themed Cultural Journeys
Beyond individual routes, Indian Railways has launched the Bharat Gaurav initiative, which operates theme-based tourist circuit trains. These are essentially all-inclusive tour packages on rails, designed to showcase India's rich culture and heritage. The trains, with exteriors showcasing Indian art and monuments, cover various circuits like pilgrimage sites, historical destinations, and regional cultural tours. These curated journeys, such as the 'Garvi Gujarat' or 'Padharo Rajasthan' tours, offer a hassle-free way to explore different facets of the country, combining travel, accommodation, and sightseeing into one experience.
