Why Flaxseeds Are Your 4 PM Friend
Flaxseeds, or alsi, are tiny powerhouses of nutrition. They are one of the best plant-based sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which are crucial for heart and brain health. They are also packed with dietary fibre, which aids digestion and helps you feel
fuller for longer, effectively curbing those unhealthy cravings. This combination of healthy fats and fibre provides a slow, steady release of energy, unlike the quick spike and crash you get from sugary snacks. Furthermore, flaxseeds contain lignans, which have antioxidant properties. Roasting not only gives them a delicious, nutty flavour and a satisfying crunch but also makes the nutrients more accessible for your body to absorb.
The Basic Pan-Roasting Method
Roasting flaxseeds on the stovetop is the quickest method and perfect for making a small batch. All you need is a heavy-bottomed pan and your raw flaxseeds. 1. Heat your pan over a medium flame. Do not add any oil or water; this is a dry-roasting process. 2. Add a single, even layer of flaxseeds to the hot pan. Don't overcrowd it. 3. Stir the seeds continuously with a spatula to ensure they roast evenly and don't burn. This is a fast process, taking about 5 to 7 minutes. 4. You'll know they're ready when they turn a slightly darker, golden-brown colour and start to make a faint popping sound, much like popcorn. 5. Immediately remove the pan from the heat and transfer the seeds to a plate to cool. They will continue to cook from the residual heat if left in the pan.
Make It Your Own: Flavour Variations
Plain roasted flaxseeds are delicious, but you can easily add flavour. For a savoury snack, once the seeds are roasted and still warm, toss them with a pinch of salt, chaat masala, or a mix of garlic powder and red chilli powder. You can add a tiny bit of oil to help the spices stick. For a sweet treat, you can adapt recipes used for candied nuts. One method involves whisking an egg white until frothy, coating the seeds, and then mixing in brown sugar and cinnamon before baking at a low temperature for about an hour, stirring occasionally. This creates a crunchy, sweet cluster perfect for munching on or adding to yoghurt.
How to Use and Store Your Snack
Once cooled completely, store your roasted flaxseeds in an airtight container. It's best to keep them in the refrigerator to protect their delicate oils from going rancid. Enjoy them by the spoonful as a simple snack. You can also sprinkle them over salads, yoghurt, oatmeal, or blend them into smoothies for an extra nutritional kick. Some people find that grinding the seeds after roasting helps with nutrient absorption. You can do this in a coffee or spice grinder just before use.
