The Study in Focus
Researchers at Columbia University conducted a study to understand the effects of the kind of mild, chronic sleep deprivation many adults experience. They recruited 95 healthy adults who typically slept a healthy seven to eight hours per night. The study was
split into two six-week phases. In one phase, participants followed their normal sleep routine. In the other, they were instructed to delay their bedtime by 90 minutes, which resulted in about 80 minutes of actual lost sleep each night. Throughout both periods, researchers tracked sleep and activity levels using wrist monitors, while also measuring changes in body weight, waist circumference, and body composition.
Less Sleep, More Sitting
The findings were clear: when participants slept less, they moved less. During the sleep restriction phase, sedentary time increased by an average of 17 minutes per day. For men and postmenopausal women, this effect was even more pronounced, with inactivity rising by nearly 30 minutes daily. Researchers noted this was significant because even after accounting for the extra time participants were awake, they still spent more of that time being inactive compared to when they were fully rested. This points to a direct behavioural change driven by sleep loss, not just a simple consequence of being awake longer.
Why Does Sleep Loss Make Us Sedentary?
While the study highlights a clear connection, the exact reasons for it are complex. Sleep deprivation is known to impact energy levels, motivation, and mood. When you're tired, the effort required to get up and be active can feel much greater. A previous study on endurance running found that partial sleep deprivation led to a higher perception of effort and lower overall performance. Hormonal changes may also play a role. Sleep helps regulate hormones tied to appetite, stress, and energy. Disrupting this delicate balance could reduce the physical and mental drive to move, making the couch a more appealing option.
The Broader Health Implications
The increase in sedentary time was not the only change observed. Participants also gained an average of about half a kilogram over the six-week period of shortened sleep. While this may not sound dramatic, the researchers warn that if these habits continue over months or years, the cumulative effect could lead to clinically significant weight gain and an increased risk of obesity-related conditions like heart disease and type 2 diabetes. In fact, related research on the same group of participants found that mild sleep restriction increased insulin resistance, particularly in women with higher cardiometabolic risk.
A Vicious Cycle of Inactivity
The link between poor sleep and a sedentary lifestyle can create a challenging feedback loop. Less sleep leads to less energy and more sitting. In turn, a lack of physical activity can negatively impact sleep quality, making it harder to get the restorative rest needed to feel energized the next day. Other studies have confirmed that high levels of sedentary behaviour are associated with an increased risk of insomnia symptoms and poor sleep quality. Breaking this cycle is crucial for long-term health and well-being.
Protecting Your Sleep and Activity
The study's findings underscore the importance of prioritizing sleep not just for mental clarity, but for maintaining an active lifestyle. Even small, consistent deficits matter. Experts suggest establishing a regular sleep schedule, even on weekends, to regulate your body's internal clock. Creating a relaxing bedtime routine and optimizing your sleep environment—cool, dark, and quiet—can also promote better rest. On days when you feel tired, try to incorporate gentle movement rather than remaining completely sedentary. A short walk can boost energy and mood, helping to counteract the lethargy that comes from insufficient sleep.
